    Major General Clayton L. Comfort, 74, died October 14, 2004 at his home in Lawrence. He was born in Wells, the son of Levi and Opal (Plunkett) Comfort.

    He was raised in Wells and graduated from Minneapolis High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps at the University of Kansas in February 1953.

    He married Ardis June Bruce in March 1960.

    He earned a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering in 1963 at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

    He served two tours in Vietnam. In 1987, he retired as Commanding General of Fleet Marine Force (Atlantic) after 34 years and seven months of serving in the Marine Corps.

    They returned to Lawrence in 1989, where he served the Habitat for Humanity Chapter and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church.

    Survivors include his wife Ardis of Lawrence; three children, Anne Comfort and husband Joe Spitek of Burke, Virginia, Lawrence Comfort and wife Gaylene of Westphalia and Rebecca Phillips and husband Mark of Portland, Oregon; and nine grandchildren.

    The funeral was October 20 at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

    Memorials are to Habitat for Humanity or First United Methodist Church, both in Lawrence.

    Levi Lawrence Comfort was born March 5, 1897 on a farm northeast of Wells, Kansas to Winfred G. and Isabell Heald Comfort. He spent his early life farming in the Wells area.

    He served in the U.S. Army in World War I. After his discharge in 1918 he went into business for himself.

    On April 13, 1924 he was married to M. Opal Plunkett at Bethany church in Ottawa county and they established their home in Wells, Kansas. Discontinuing his truck business, he became a road patrolman and continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1962.

    Levi was a member of World War I Barricks 3059 holding offices at both state and local levels, American Legion Post 100 in Minneapolis, and was an active worker for the Methodist church of Wells.
    He died June 17, 1973 at the Ottawa County Hospital.

    Died:
    Frances Isabelle Heald, daughter of Clark and Catherine Gilmour Heald, was born near Wells Nov. 2, 1876 and departed this life Dec. 28, 1960 in Asbury hospital, Salina, Kansas, at the age of eighty-four years.

    In October, 1896, she was united in marriage to Winfred Gerald Comfort and began housekeeping on a farm northeast of Wells. To this union were born eight children, six boys and two girls.

    She loved farm life and derived much joy from her garden and flowers. She was truly a daughter of the soil.

    She will be remembered by her family as a devoted mother and to all who knew her as a kind friend and neighbor.
