"Richville, July 1.-- . . . Mr. E. J. Spooner for many years a resident of this town, died Saturday night after a protracted illness. Mr. Spooner suffered a severe shock of paralysis early in March last, and although he had been about somewhat since that time, his mind and strength gradually failed. The deceased was an enterprising farmer upon land which he cleared with his own hands, and he was highly respected by all. He was closely identified with the interests of the Congregational church, of which he and his family were members and at the time of his death held the office of deacon and trustee. For years he has been church chorister and has sacrificed time and energy to this important department of church work. Mr. S. was also a veteran of the late war and a member of Rich Post G. A. R. His age was 62 years." [http://nyshistoricnewspapers.org/lccn/sn83031423/1890-07-03/ed-1/seq-1/]

Spooner, widow of Deacon E. J. Spooner, recently deceased, died at her home here Sept. 25th, after a two weeks illness. She was attended by Dr. Brownlow, of Ogdensburg and McFalls, of Gouverneur, but all that medical skill could do proved in vain.
She wasted to a mere skeleton and suffered agonies until death came to her relief. Mrs. Spooner was a member of the congregational church and prominent as a Christian worker. She leaves six children to mourn her loss, viz: three daughters, Mrs. B. F. Chandler, of this village, Mrs. Anna B. Spencer, of DeKalb and Alice M., who has been dangerously sick for months past. Three sons, Fred, John C. and Frank. The funeral services were held from the Congregational Church, which was crowded with mourning friends. The sermon by the pastor, Rev. T. T. Davies, was full of comfort and consolation."
