    LeRoy Fred Windhorst, 96, Wells, died Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis. He was born March 22, 1920 near Wells to Fred and Grace (Kay) Windhorst.

    His employment consisted of working for Glenn L. Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, MD and Beech Aircraft in Wichita. While in Wichita he met Maxine Baker and they were married October 25, 1941.

    LeRoy was a veteran of the Army Air Corp and a B29 engineer instructor at the Amarillo Air Field near Amarillo, TX during WWII. After his departure from the Air Corp in 1946, they made their home in Wells.

    LeRoy was a farmer and stockman until his retirement in 1990.

    He was a member of the Wells Sunset Spiritualist Church, Minneapolis Country Club, and a charter member of the Wells Lions Club. LeRoy had life memberships with the American Legion and the Salina Moose Club. He served on the Wells and Minneapolis school boards, he was director of the former Ottawa County Bank and the United Branch Bank. LeRoy also served on the board for the Good Samaritan Society and the Highland Cemetery both in Minneapolis.

    Most of all, he was a very ardent worker for his small town of Wells, KS.

    He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rovena McGavran and Bonnie Sparger.

    Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Maxine; sons Randy and wife Bernie of Wichita and Phil of Bennington; and two grandchildren Andrea and Alex both of Bennington.

    Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, September 26 at Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis, where the family will receive friends from 3-5. Memorials may be made to the Wells Community Building.
