    Died:
James Walker was born in Ontario, Canada, June 16, 1844, and died at Alexandria, Minn., February 3, 1910.
Mr. Walker's early years were spent in Canada, where he learned the blacksmith trade in his father's shop. He worked at this trade and in the pineries until he was about twenty-two years of age, when he came west, arriving in Douglas county early in the summer of 1866. Soon after coming to Alexandria Mr. Walker filed on a homestead in section 35, Alexandria township. On August 4, 1869, Mr. Walker was married to Miss Margaret Smith. In the early seventies Mr. Walter moved to Alexandria and for a time operated his brother, robert Walker's blacksmith shop. About 1875 he opened a confectionery store in a small building on the site now occupied by the Sheldon Clothing house. In 1877 Mr. Walker, in company with James Purdon, opened a general store in the fram building afterwards known as "Ward's Store." The partnership was soon after dissolved and Mr. Walker continued at the old stand, conducting the first exclusive grocery store in this city. In May, 1880, N. P. Ward became a partner and the business was continued under the firm name of Walker & Ward, when Mr. Walker retired from the firm.
In March, 1905, Mrs. Walker died, leaving her husband with seven grown children.
In 1897 Mr. Walker erected a building on the east side of Main street, which he occupied as a business house until about a year ago when he closed our and leased the building. Since that time Mr. Walker has been out of business.
On April 17, 1907 Mr. Walker was married the second time to Miss Lloyda Pottsmith, who with one small child survives him. Seven children by the first marriage survive Mr. Walker. They are Daniel G. Walker, St. Paul; Mrs. Mary Millard, Minneapolis; James Walker, Alexandria; Sarah Walker, Lakota, N.D.; Minnie Walker, Cando, N.D.; Harvey Walker, Alexandria; Maggie Walker, Alexandria; and Ms. M. Gerberich, Alexandria.

    Died:
Mrs. James Walker died Saturday evening after a long illness.
The deceased was born in Canada, October 11, 1846. She came to Douglas county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm smith and settled in the town of Orange, where Mr. Smith took a homestead. She was married to James Walker in August thirty-five years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Walker lived on a homestead in the southeast corner of Alexandria town for about five years. Thirty years ago last December Mr. and Mrs. Walker and young children moved to Alexandria. This has been their home since
Mrs. Walker was a home woman and cared little for outside companionship or society. A few friends and her home were sufficient. For years she had been subject to attacks of serious illness and since last November had been confined to the house the greater part of the time to her bed. The end came Saturday evening shortly after six o'clock.
The deceased leaves, besides her husband, eight children, three sons and five daughters. The children all reside in Alexandria. They are Daniel G., James and Harvey, the latter a salesman in his fathers store. The daughters are: Mrs. Mary Simpson, Sarah, Minnie, Maggie and Clara. They are all at home.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon. A short service was held at the home and later services were held in the Episcopal church. The rector, the Rev. G. W. Barnes, officiated. The pallbearers were from the Odd Fellows Lodge, of which Mrs. Walker was a charter member. The lodge was represented at the funeral by a large delegation. The bearers were Messrs. G. B. Ward, G. G. S. Campbell, Frank Kent, L. S. Kaiser, C. F. Canfield and John Abercrombie. The interment was at Kinkead cemetery.
