Richard R. "Hank" Rice, 70, of Athens died May 8, 2009 at home. He was born February 26, 1939, the son of Russell and Marguerite (Russell) Rice in Bellevue. Hank served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked as a barber at Family Barber Shop in Union City as well as for Kellogg's. Hank was preceded in death by his wife, Eva (Baird) Rice on May 8, 2001; his parents; stepfather, Lloyd Pyke; son, Craig A. Rice; and brother, James A. Rice. He is survived by his children, Richard L. Rice, Gary R. (Carol) Rice, Cheryl L. (Lonnie) Head and James L. (Trisha) Rice, all of Athens; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Paul (Helen) Rice of Bellevue; and sister, Marjorie (Ted) Millard of Battle Creek. Hank played AAA baseball and excelled in basketball in Battle Creek and still enjoyed watching baseball and basketball as well as watching his grandchildren play sports. He also enjoyed reading. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4:00 p.m. and 6 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue. Services will take place 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at the funeral home with Pastor Sandy Gastian, Athens United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment, Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Eva May Rice, 62, of Athens died May 8, 2001, in Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo.

She was born Sept. 8, 1938, in Ann Arbor to James Sidney and Martha (Warrick) Baird.

She graduated from Belleville High School, and was an employee of the Battle Creek Federal Center for 38 years before retiring.

She married Richard rice on March 17, 1962, in Portage. He survives.

Also surviving are sons, Richard and Gary Rice, both of Athens, and Jim Rice of Battle creek; a daughter, Cheryl Head of Athens; seven grandchidlren; and a sister, Sydney Harper of Clinton.

She was preceded in death by a son, Craig Rice; a sister, Betty Gerchow; and her parents.

Community involvement, hobbies: Member of the Athens United Methodist Church. Enjoyed cross stitching, walking, watching sunsets, caring for flowers and spending time with her grandchildren.

Visitaiton: 6 to 8 p.m. today at Spencer Family Funeral Home, Athens.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sandra Gastian officiating.

Died Friday, Dec. 11, 1992 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. she was born Jan. 24, 1909 in Lower Pewabic, MI. The daughter of the late William and Mary Elizabeth (Bond) Warrick. She married James Sidney Baird on July 12, 1930 and he preceded her in death April 8, 1973. Mrs Baird was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Lively Travelers Senior Citizens Club and the Senior Citizens of Willow Run.

Survivors include two daughters, Eva (Richard) Rice of Athens, MI and Sydney (Kenneth) Harper of Ypsilanti; one son-in-law Kurt Gerchow of OR; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Betty Gerchow; a son in infancy; a grandson, Craig Rice; two sisters Eva Giles and Geraldine Paduan; three brothers, Joseph, James and William Warrick.

The funeral service will be Monday at Faith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gerald Hunter and the Rev. Douglas Olson co-officiating. Burial will follow in Denton Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Mrs Baird may be made to Faith United Methodisst Church building fund. The family will receive friends Saturday, 5:30 to 9 pm and Sunday, 1pm to 4 pm and 6pm to 9 pm at the funeral home.
