Mr. Walker's early years were spent in Canada, where he learned the blacksmith trade in his father's shop. He worked at this trade and in the pineries until he was about twenty-two years of age, when he came west, arriving in Douglas county early in the summer of 1866. Soon after coming to Alexandria Mr. Walker filed on a homestead in section 35, Alexandria township. On August 4, 1869, Mr. Walker was married to Miss Margaret Smith. In the early seventies Mr. Walter moved to Alexandria and for a time operated his brother, robert Walker's blacksmith shop. In 1877 Mr. Walker, in company with James Purdon, opened a general store in the fram building afterwards known as "Ward's Store." The partnership was soon after dissolved and Mr. Walker continued at the old stand, conducting the first exclusive grocery store in this city. In May, 1880, N. P. Ward became a partner and the business was continued under the firm name of Walker & Ward, when Mr. Walker retired from the firm.
In March, 1905, Mrs. Walker died, leaving her husband with seven grown children.
In 1897 Mr. Walker erected a building on the east side of Main street, which he occupied as a business house until about a year ago when he closed our and leased the building. Since that time Mr. Walker has been out of business.
