    Death of Hugh Johnston.

There died yesterday (Monday) in this village Hugh Johnston, Lanark's oldest man. His exact age was 90 years and 3 months. He was born Sept. 28th, 1822 at St Andrew's, Quebec.

His early life lay in those pioneer days when hardship and toil were the common lot of the men and women who ventured into these primitive wilds and with lieautiful courage set about the task of making homes. He was of a sturdy type, the knocks and blows incident to such a life only serving to make him the more steadfast in later years. Much of his younger days are obscured through lack of record in the family, but it may correctly be surmised that he played a part in the lumbering industry which long ago was the sole opening any young man in the district had for earning a living. The present generation knew Mr. Johnston as the fine old gentleman who for nearly thirty year had been night watchman in the woolen mill of Messrs, Boyd CaMwell Co. Limited, retired in 1909 on account of failing health, but always with mind alert for the things going on around him. His parents were John Johnston and wife, Margaret Cathcart. There were two brothers, George and John and two sisters, Mrs. W. Clark and Mrs. W. Field. In 1858 Mr. Johnston was married to Miss Margaret Gillespie and to them were born Mrs. James Rodger, Nellie, John and Mary deceased, Ida (Mrs. F. Deachman of Edmonton and Bella at home. He was a kind-hearted man, simple in his habits, retiring disposition and throughout his life practising that golden rule which demands of men the same treatment they would give others. Faithful in the discharge of any duty with which he was intrusted, this quality commanded for him the respect of his employers and earned superannuation when he was no longer able to do the work that he had done so long and so well.

The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock, to Lanark Village cemetery.

Hugh married Margaret Gillespie on 25 Mar 1859 in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Margaret (daughter of Thomas Gillespie and Isabella Campbell) was born in 1828 in Ontario, Canada; died on 22 Aug 1898 in Lanark Village, Lanark Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
