    Died:
The official Death Register of "Ontario, Canada, Deaths and Deaths Overseas, 1869-1946" at the Archives of Ontario; Toronto, Ontario, Canada says October 11th, so the mistake was made when the Grave Marker was made. John was born in Barnstaple, Devonshire and earned a Trade as a Stone Mason and Builder. With his wife Ellen and three children, they emigrated to the British Colony of Upper Canada in 1843. (the nation of Canada was established in 1867) They first settled in Brockville, then moved to North Burgess Township, in Lanark County, Ontario, where John built a Stone House on 250 acres of land. He built a number of houses in the nearby town of Perth. In 1871 he was employed as a Plasterer, and was always involved in farming. They attended St. Andrew's Church.
    From his Obituary:
"He was a typical Englishman, bluff, honest and straightforward and was a good citizen wherever he dwelt. He was married to Margaret Ellen McCrea, a native of Scotland who died two years ago. Their children were: Richard who died in Manitoba a good number of years ago; William of North Elmsley; Mrs. Coffey of Perth; Mrs. Charles McDonald of Scotch Line; Mrs. Margaret Harper, deceased; Mrs. James Arthur of Smith's Falls; and Mrs. W.R. Paul of Perth. The funeral will leave the residence for Elmwood Cemetery at 2:00 today, Friday."
From John and Ellen come most of the present day Oatways of Canada, and some in the United States.
(John's family was the 2nd of four English Oatway family emigration's to Canada)

John married Ellen McRae in 1834. Ellen was born on 23 Sep 1802 in Wick, Caithness, Highland Region, Scotland; died on 16 Jun 1891 in Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Died:
Her name was possibly Margaret Ellen McRae. Ellen was born in Wick, Caithness, Scotland, apparently the daughter of Peter and Margaret (Fraser). The family story says that she left there in the 1830's as a Nanny with a family to the south of England where her employers sailed away leaving her behind so she was out of a job. She stayed in the Devonshire area where she met John Oatway, a man with a farm by Barnstaple. They married and started a family, bearing children Richard McCrae, Mary Ann Fraser and William Henry. Shortly after their fourth child George Brodie Oatway died during the Devonshire crop failure period of the 1830s-40's, they emigrated to Canada West, formerly called Upper Canada. She worked hard on their new property and bore a large family of four more children, Sarah Jane, Margaret Helen, Elizabeth Matilda, and Jessie Clara. On Sundays, if John was far away working, she would ride her horse sidesaddle to church in nearby Perth. The photo of her and John was taken in a studio in Perth, Canada West (Ontario) in 1861. (too bad it's not in colour as she had beautiful blue eyes)
