Marion (known as May) was born at Hood's Corners, Dalhousie on 5th Apr 1826. Marion Hood was the daughter of William Hood and Martha Park.

She married John Stewart Baird (b. 13th May 1827 in Dalhousie) in Bathurst, Ontario on 25th Apr 1851.

They had twelve children:

The 1891 census records that John was a farmer in the Dalhousie - Sherbrook North area of Lanark. John died on 9th Apr 1901 and is buried in Hopetown cemetery.


The Lanark Era [Ontario]

In Lanark Twp. Monday, Jan. 15th, Marion Hood, relict of the late John Baird, aged 79 years. Born in Dalhousie, at Hood's, the family moved to Western Ontario, where her brothers, William, Andrew and James still live; David, at Deluth; Mrs. Arch. Penman, and Mrs. Wm Rodger, of Dalhousie are sisters. Mr. John Baird died six or seven years ago. Their family living: James, Dalhousie; Mrs. Arch Creighton, near Perth, Mrs. Wm. Miller, Lanark; and Mrs. Hugh Knowles, Hopetown. Buried in Hopetown Cemetery.

William Hood was the son of James Hood (#51456319)and his first wife Elizabeth Jones. James Hood is buried at Creemore Cemetery, Simcoe County, Ontario.

William's mother, Elizabeth Jones, died when William was a young child, and so his father eventually remarried. William left from Greenock, Scotland with his family on July 4, 1820 and sailed on the Prompt for Canada. It has been said that he met his future wife, Martha Park, on board this ship and that theirs was a shipboard romance, but there is no documentation to support that Martha came to Canada at the same time.

That first winter at Dalhousie Township, the school teacher hired and brought over by the name of George Richmond, died when a tree fell on him. He was the first death in the Dalhousie settlement ("The Lanark Society Settlers" by Carol Bennett p. 16). This is probably the teaching position that William Hood took over. It has been said that William had had two years of college before emigrating to Canada. The school house was located at an intersection called Hood's Corner. The school is still standing today, but is a private residence. The Common School Report for 1827 (From the Journal of Assembly of Upper Canada - 1928) shows that William Hood was one of six teachers in Dalhousie Township. William Hood had 12 boys and 10 girls in his classroom.

The soil in Dalhousie Township was quite rocky, causing many of the original emigrants, and many of the first generation children, to relocate to western Ontario where the soil was better. William and Martha did not leave, probably because William had his teaching pay (whatever he could collect in money or other things such as food) besides his farm to supplement his income.

On the Canadian 1871 Census, William and Martha are age 71 and are living with their son John and his family. John and his family are still living in Lanark County, Ontario at this time.

William married Martha Park. Martha (daughter of James Park, I and Marrion Allen) was born in 1799 in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, Scotland; was christened on 31 Jan 1799 in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 21 Jan 1880 in Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Saint Andrew's Cemetery, Watson's Corner, Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. "TULLIALLAN, parish, containing Kincardine town, on the Forth, in a detached district of Perthshire. Its length is about 2 3/4 miles; its breadth nearly 2 1/2 miles; its area 3586 acres. Real property in 1880-81, ?9120. Pop. 2199. The land contains part of a gentle broad-based hill, but mostly slopes gently from northern boundary to the Forth, and comprises a valuable tract, reclaimed and embanked from the tide. Coal and ironstone are plentiful. The chief seat is Tulliallan Castle; and the chief antiquities are the ruined old Tulliallan Castle, and the old church at Overtown. The present churches are Established, Free, and United Presbyterian, and the public schools are 2, with about 251 scholars."

An earlier structure about a half mile NW, Old Tulliallan Castle, was built by 1304, when it was ordered to be strengthened by Edward I of England, it then passed into the ownership of William Douglas first Earl of Douglas, and was granted by the Douglases to the Edmonstones,and thence to a junior branch of the Blackadders , and finally to the Bruces of Carnock. A fortified house with a keep and rib- vaulted ground floor, it was abandoned in the seventeenth century.

The Earl Lord Douglas - the Douglas estates of his father lay in some of the staunchest Presbyterian, covenanting territory in Scotland , and his tenantry were not at all amenable to King James ( James II of England , James VII of Scotland ), a Catholic. This Regiment, the Cameronian's, one of the oldest in the British Army - was also the personal Regiment of The Baron, the Earl Lord Dalhousie, Governor General of the Province of Canada in Europe. Earl Lord Dalhousie was Lt. Colonel of the Cameronian's.

Marion's parents may have been Hugh Allen and Mary Park. She married James Park on Aug. 8, 1788 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland. James was born Feb. 9, 1766 and worked as a coallier in Scotland; he was the son of James Park and Martha Connell who were married July 17, 1768. James is thought to have died in Plympton Twp., Lambton Co., Ontario.

UPDATED INFO - October 2013 - Marion is probably not buried at Umpherston Cemetery. She probably relocated to Plympton Twp., Lambton Co., and is buried there, location unknown. This information is based on L. Hanson's work in finding Hugh Park's will.

Marion and James had 13 children. All of their children, born in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland, came to Canada, except for their son Andrew, who stayed in Scotland. Marion and James lived in the West Cotes area of Cambuslang.

The children of James and Marion were:

James Jr. b. Jun. 8, 1789; m. Euphemia Sutherland; d. probably in Plympton Twp., Lambton Co, Ontario. Euphemia may have been the daughter of William Sutherland and Katherine McPherson. Their son Allen's line appears to have moved down to Michigan.

Hugh b. Sep. 29, 1790; m. Janet Hay on Aug. 22, 1812 at Cambuslang, Lanarkshire Co., Scotland; d. Oct. 9, 1841 Plympton Twp., Lambton Co, Ontario (Janet is findagrave #114136155).

Mary b. Oct. 15, 1792; m. William Arbuckle/Arbucle. It is thought that they came to Canada later than most of the family. The couple did not have any children. Eventually they returned to Scotland. Research by Michael Umperson provides the death registration for Mary and William.

Marion Allen b. Jul. 17, 1794; m. William Umpherston about 1818; d. Jun. 20, 1871/73 and is buried at Umpherston Pioneer Cemetery, Dalhousie Twp., Lanark County, Ontario.

Andrew b. Jul. 19, 1796; m. Jane/Jean Pollock on Mar. 7, 1820. His second wife was Margaret Gould married May 3, 1849. Andrew died Aug. 21, 1873 in Cambuslang, Scotland.

Joseph b. Apr. 16, 1798; m. Agnes Sarah Duncan Jan. 25, 1825 in Dalhousie Twp., Lanark Co., Ontario. Joseph died Apr. 17, 1868.

Martha b. Dec. 31, 1799; m. William Hood, a school teacher in the Dalhousie Twp. area; d. Jan. 21, 1880 and buried at St. Andrew's Cemetery, Watson's Corner, Dalhousie Twp., Lanark County, Ontario.

John b. May 11, 1802; m. Louisa Smith on Mar. 24, 1840//41 in Plympton Twp., Lambton Co., Ontario; d. Mar. 30, 1869 Provo, UT. (See FAG #12162495)

Ellen "Nellie" b. Feb. 6, 1804; m. Andrew Park (no relation between the two have been found) abt. 1824; d. in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.

William b. Oct. 26, 1805; m. Jean/Jane Duncan Sep. 25, 1827/28 Dalhousie Twp., Lanark Co., Ontario; His second wife was Janet Findlay m. Apr. 7, 1850/51 in Utah; His third wife was Mary S. Gordon m. Jun. 11, 1854 in Utah; William died Mar. 11, 1890 at Millcreek, Salt Lake County, Utah.

Margaret b. Jul. 10, 1807; m. James William Wood Brown in 1827 Dalhousie Twp., Lanark Co., d. Apr. 14, 1892 and is buried at Avon Bank Cemetery, Perth County, Ontario.

David b. Jun. 12, 1809; m. Ann Brooks abt. 1829 Dalhousie Twp., Lanark Co., Ontario; d. Jul. 22, 1884 and is buried at Mottsville Cemetery, Douglas Co., Nevada (See FAG #15022787)

Jean, born Feb. 1/10, 1814; m. David Williamson of Watford, Warwick Twp., Lambton County, Ontario on May 5, 1838 (#148861036?). Nothing more is officially known about Jean, but some report she died in 1839 while giving birth to their first child. On May 25, 1840 David married Mary Lamb in Watford.

Marion and James had 13 children. All of their children, born in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland, came to Canada, except for their son Andrew, who stayed in Scotland. Marion and James lived in the West Cotes area of Cambuslang.
