    Mr. Daniel Baird
We have to chronicle this week the death of Mr. Daniel Baird, of Hopetown, who passed away aat the Victoria Hospital, Montreal. Deceased had been complaining since last September, and a week ago Monday went to the hospital where it was found he was suffering from kidney trouble. Everything that could be done by skilled hands to relieve the sufferer was done, but last evening he succumbed to the inevitable. Mrs. Baird and Mrs Jas. McCurdy, of this place, went to Montreal on Monday night, and were present at the deathbed. Mr. Baird was born on the homestead, near Hopetown, 58 years ago, wher he resided until about four years ago, when he sold his farm and moved into the village. He was well-known throughout the county, having bought cattle and lambs for many years, and for the last twenty years was tax collector for Lanark Township. He was also in partnership with Jas Herron in the Clyde Cheese Factoryl Thirty Two years ago he married Miss Margaret McLaughlin, of Middleville, and this union was blessed with a family of three children - Mrs. Jas. McCurdy of this place, Daniel, cheesemaker at Hopetown; and Carrie, at home.

"The entire (Baird) trail (in Lanark, Ont, near Herron's Mills) now covers about three kilometres, with interpretive panels along the path to point out different types of trees and natural landmarks. History of the property
A pioneer family first settled on the property in 1837, with basic food crops and livestock in the fields and a forest that provided lumber, fuel and maple syrup. The sandy soil was not ideal for agricultural, and the lowlands flooded due to beaver dams.
The land was left idle in the 1920s. In 1963, Margaret Baird sold the 36-hectare parcel to the county, which planted a red-pine planation as part of a conservation program.
To reach the trail, take Hwy. 511 north to Herron Mills Road and turn right. The trail entrance is on the left at 2410 Herron Mills Road. The spot has a parking lot, a picnic area and pit toilets at the entrance to the trail." (CMcF2012)

?/i?One day in 1853, two sons of Andrew Baird of Lanark Co., in Ontario came to the end of a hard day of laying a stone fence. Charles put a heavy stone in place and then told his brother it would be the last stone he would lay. With emphasis he declared, 'I am going to look for a farm where they don't have stones.'. True to his word, a few days later he asked hisfather for some money to enable him to visit some of their former neighbours who had located in Perth Co. ....

James Baird came from Glasgow but was originally from Perthshire Scotland. He appears to have sailed with seven children but without his wife, Janet King. She appears to be buried with him at Hopetown so possibly she remained behind and joinde him in 1821. Some women, pregnant or with a sick child, did this." The Lanark Society Settlers, Carol Bennett

"TULLIALLAN, parish, containing Kincardine town, on the Forth, in a detached district of Perthshire. Its length is about 2 3/4 miles; its breadth nearly 2 1/2 miles; its area 3586 acres. Real property in 1880-81, ?9120. Pop. 2199. The land contains part of a gentle broad-based hill, but mostly slopes gently from northern boundary to the Forth, and comprises a valuable tract, reclaimed and embanked from the tide. Coal and ironstone are plentiful. The chief seat is Tulliallan Castle; and the chief antiquities are the ruined old Tulliallan Castle, and the old church at Overtown. The present churches are Established, Free, and United Presbyterian, and the public schools are 2, with about 251 scholars."

An earlier structure about a half mile NW, Old Tulliallan Castle, was built by 1304, when it was ordered to be strengthened by Edward I of England, it then passed into the ownership of William Douglas first Earl of Douglas, and was granted by the Douglases to the Edmonstones, and thence to a junior branch of the Blackadders , and finally to the Bruces of Carnock. A fortified house with a keep and rib- vaulted ground floor, it was abandoned in the seventeenth century.

The Earl Lord Douglas - the Douglas estates of his father lay in some of the staunchest Presbyterian, covenanting territory in Scotland , and his tenantry were not at all amenable to King James ( James II of England , James VII of Scotland ), a Catholic. This Regiment, the Cameronian's, one of the oldest in the British Army - was also the personal Regiment of The Baron, the Earl Lord Dalhousie, Governor General of the Province of Canada in Europe. Earl Lord Dalhousie was Lt. Colonel of the Cameronian's.

    ?b?Letter from John McLachlan?/b?

"Upper Canada, New Lanark 11th December 1820."

Letter written to one of the M.P.'s in the House in Britain that advocated for Earl Lord Bathurst's and Wellington's emigration scheme.

    "To Kirkman Findlay Esq. M.P."

    "Honourable Sir

According to promise, I take the opportunity of writing for the information of your Honour, in relation to the Societies who emigrated from Scotland. Sir, the lateness of the season has rendered our location unusually difficult, as well as hazardous for the health of the women and children. Your Honour anticipated this, when I last saw you in London ( the last of the money for the Ship Brock being raised in London ) however, Captain Marshall, to whom our location is entrusted, has spared no trouble, in having the people into their houses, on their different lots, before the severity of the season would be felt by them. This he has now, I may say effected. He has been particularly careful to see, that nothing, in his power, be wanting, in making one and all of them comfortable. Blankets, of good quality, have been served out, as well as other necessary articles, such as implements of husbandry. The people appear to be in good spirits, and I hope they will all do well; if they do not, it will be their own fault. This land in this township is in general hilly, and particularly well watered. As for the soil, I can say little about it as yet. The weather is much colder here than it is at home, at this time of year. The snow has been on the ground since the 1st of November, it is now six inches deep. The frost has been very severe these few nights past; and the people who are acquainted with the country, anticipating a long winter. Our people, in general, remain healthy. I would advise all who intend coming out next season, to come out as soon as possible in the spring. I expect to be able to give your Honour more particular information, in the course of a few months."

"Honoured Sir, I remain your humble Servant

    (signed) John McLachlan. "

    ?b??i?Location?/b??/i?
ohn McLachlan Senior settled on his lot Concession 1 Lot 20 beside James Baird Senior, Diane's 4 great grandpa who settled at Concession 1 Lot 18. So right next door basically one lot between them.

John McLachlan's lot was a crappy lot so he moved. But what is not said and that we must note is that he could not sell the lot so he simply abandoned it and I do not think he is the only one doing this by any means.

He purchased another lot near Middleville beside Taylor's and Carmichael's and across the road from the Reid's century farm owned by Bob Reid who recently passed away in Middleville as his John McLachlan's first lot was by road to Wilds of Lavant north of Hopetown.

Then later John McLachlan sells lot in Middleville to his son James McLachlan as is worth something and he moves to North Elmsley Township to his third lot.
