Lester Alfred Benson (1889-1965) was born in Marshall County, Iowa, but resided most of his life in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He was a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and practiced at Benson & Benson Animal Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. He married Anna Cromwell Rowatt (1884-1939) of Perth, Ontario.

    ?b?LESTER ALFRED BENSON 1889 - 1965
?/b?Written by Barbara Benson Baltisberger daughter of Herbert Benson & Helen Kerr
Lester was fourth son of Daniel and Caroline and his grandfather was James and grandmother was Frances. Lester was born in Marshall County. See "Memories of Lester Benson Family" by Helen (Benson) Belshaw. He became a veterinary and was State Veterinarian for many years. He married Anna Rowett and they lived in East Grand Forks and had four children-Max, Eileen, Myron and Jean. Jean was an invalid and bedfast. She didn't live past 16 years.
Aunt Anna died in 1939 following gall bladder surgery and Uncle Lester hired a lady who cared for the family. She brought her elderly mother to live there.
Uncle Lester died at age of 81 in 1965. Lester always loved to have his relatives from Iowa visit. One time Cecil, Elmer, Charles and Bill Baltisberger made the trip (in 1954). They were invited to watch "Doc" operate on a dog. "You'd better get that young man outside quickly or you'll be picking him up off the floor." Cecil hustled Elmer out. Elmer never could stand the sight of blood. He survived! So did the dog!
We loved to have Uncle Lester visit Iowa. He always had lots of good stories. One time he had a Brittany Spaniel at his office and he got a call to the country and dashed out of the office telling the dog to "stay." The dog stayed in the same spot until "Doc" came back late in the day. The dog was well trained. He felt badly he didn't get back sooner.
Jean (1925-1941) loved music and every time Barbara visited she played the piano and Jean would laugh and smile. The boys went on to college and Max to Iowa State to be a veterinarian and joined his dad in practice. Myron went to California. We loved Max coming to Iowa State College as he visited us Iowa cousins often. Max met his wife (Josephine Haupert) in college. He got his degree in 1940 and practiced in Grand Forks and Jamestown, N.D., and other places. He was divorced from Josephine Haupert. They had three children- William Lee (1941), Judy Jo, and Diane Ann (1945). Max died at a Yakima, Washington, nursing home following a hip fracture that caused his retirement.

    Pretty Wedding at Rugby
At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred F. Rowatt in Rugby on last Wednesday afternoon occurred the marriage of a prominent young couple of Rolette, Miss Anna Rowatt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Rowatt, and L. A. Benson, the well known state veterinarian.

The wedding ceremony took place under an arch twined with smilax and Rev. H. Ketcham was the officiating clergyman. The strains of Mendelssonhn's wedding march layed by Mrs. Martin Benson announced the coming of the bridal party, the bride, attired in a dainty and simple princess gown of white, leaning on the arm of her father, her bridesmaid, Miss Eva Rowatt of Winnipeg also gowned in white and carrying pink carnations, the groom and his best man, A. Benson. After the nutial words had been spoken congratulations were extended and this was followed by the service of the wedding dinner.

In the evening Dr. and Mrs. Benson left on their honeymoon, expecting to take quite an extended trip through Minnesota, Iowa and Manitoba. The bride's traveling suit was of electric blue worn with large black hat.
