Starr E. Stewart, Old Railroader, Dies In 85th Year

One of the best-known veteran railroaders in this area, Starr Easton Stewart, retired Canadian Pacific Railway locomotive engineer, died at his home in Carleton Place Friday night. Mr Stewart, who began railroading in 1882 and has been a resident of Carleton Place for some 56 years, was in his 85th year. A son, J. W. Stewart, is the CPR's assistant superintendent at Ottawa. The late Mr. Stewart and his wife, the former Elizabeth Jane Warren who survives him, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary five years ago last September.

Mr. Stewart was born In Brockville on Sept. 23, 1862, and began his career as a carpenter, but became a Canadian Pacific man in 1882 and remained so until his retirement 20 years ago in 1927. He was an engineer for 40 years after four years as a fireman, and has been a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for more than half a century. The railroad tradition is strong in the family, for, in addition to J. W. Stewart, assistant superintendent, Ottawa, another son C. E. Stewart, is a CPR locomotive engineer running out of Calgary. Two daughters also survive, Mrs. H. J. Burns, of Carleton Place, and Mrs. F. H. Bawden. of Cedar Glen. Calif. A third daughter, Mrs. Fred Beilman, died at her Coral Gables, Fla., home in 1943. Four grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Stewart was a life member, AF and AM, Carleton Place, and a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian church. Services are being held this afternoon at Patterson's funeral parlors, Carleton Place. Mr. Stewart joined the CPR in 1882 at Brockville, and transferred to Ottawa as a Wiper the following year. In July, 1884, he was promoted to fireman and became a locomotive engineer in March 1888, running out of then Carleton Junction. An engineer for 40 years thereafter, he was pensioned May 1, 1927.
