Robert was born April 25,1779 in Stevenston, Aryshire, Scotland, the son of Robert Love and Elizabeth Lockhart. He was married in Ireland about 1811/1812 to Deborah Donnahue. Robert was a veteran of the 42nd regiment during the Napoleonic Wars. Robert was a weaver by trade and when the woolen mills put in machinery he had no work, so he enlisted in the 42nd Highlanders in December of 1806 in the 5th Garrison Regiment which was raised in Dublin.

- In memory of Robert Love, died Feb.22,1862, aged 84 years. Enlisted in 1812, Served 11 years. A soldier part of that time in the 42nd Highlanders. A Native of Scotland.

The following was taken from the Regimental Muster Book:
* 1808 - Garrison moved in latter part of year to Cork.
* 1810 - 1811 - Garrison wintered in Nenogh, County Tipperary - Oct 29, 1810 Robert Love on furlough to January 29, 1811. This was during much of the time of the regiments first visit to Nenagh, Tipperary.
* 1811 - 1813 - Returned to Dublin.
* 1813 - 1813 - Garrison at Nenagh, Tipperary.
* 1814, Dec. 5 - Regiment disbanded.
* 1816, Aug. 31 - Enlisted in 42nd headquarters in Glasgow.
* 1816, Sept. 25 - Drafted to 1st Battalion.
* 1817, April - Regiment left Glasgow, proceeded to Ireland, landed at Donaghadee, County Down, and marched to Armagh, County of Armagh.
* 1818, June - Stationed at Strabane, County Tyrone.
* 1919, May - Detached duty in latter month in either Carrickmacross, Monaghan, or Coveragh.
* 1819, April 16 - Discharged.

After his discharge, Robert went to Ireland and was still a weaver by trade. When weaving became mechanized he decided to emigrate to Canada. Robert, his wife Deborah and three children sailed on the ship, Commerce, leaving Scotland May 11, 1821, and landed in Quebec on June 20, 1821. They located in Lanark County on August 1, 1821 and received their deed on July 4, 1837. Their farm was Lot 4, Concession IV between Maberly and Elphin, North Sherbrooke Twp.
