    Mr. Alonzo Luce, Sr., died at four o'clock p.m. Wednesday aged 79 years and 9 months. He was a well to do farmer, living near Newville. He came to California in 1853 and settled in Sonoma county. He afterwards farmed near Princeton two years, and came from there to Newville forty-two years ago. He leaves a wife, five sons and three daughters, all grown. They are John, Isaac, Alonzo, Guy M. and Zachariah Luce, Mrs. James Millsaps, Mrs. H. Milligan and Mrs. Robt. Gibbons. - Transcribed by E.

    DEATH CALLS PIONEER LADY
    Mrs. Elizabeth Luce Passes Away at Newville Home Last Sunday

    Mrs. Elizabeth McKay Luce, relict of the late Alonzo Luce, passed away at her home near Newville at 7:30 o'clock last Sunday evening. Death was due to a general decline, which began since the death of her husband who preceded her over the river of death only a few months ago. She was 71 years of age and her death was not unexpected.
    Mrs. Elizabeth McKay Luce was born in Canada, October 15, 1836. With her parents she moved to Illinois in 1840, and resided in that State to 1854, when she crossed the plains with her father, Daniel McKay, who settled near Roseberg, Oregon. Three years later they came to California and located at Santa Rosa, the father opening a blacksmith shop at that place. On March 24, 1859, Miss McKay married Alonzo Luce. In 1864 Mr. and Mrs. Luce moved to the farm two miles south-west of Newville where they spent the remainder of their lives. Here Mr. Luce engaged in stock-raising and farming with a marked degree of success up to the time of his death a few months ago.

    Died:
    David McKay was born in Gorbal Scotland. A parish in Lanarkshire until 1846. It was a parish for both civil and religious purposes from the eighteenth century until 1846, when it became part of the city of Glasgow.

    He was the third child (second son) of Hugh McKay and Elizabeth Ross. He emigrated to Canada with his father, mother, two brothers and two sisters in 1815 on the Atlas.

    David McKay married Amelia Wrathall (dtr of Lupton Wrathall and Rebecca Walamond) on the 24th of Jun 1819 at James Church, Perth, Ontario, Canada,.

    He acquired Lot 30 con 8 in N Elmsley Twp from his father-in-law and farmed the land an raised 11 children. In later years he would take off to explore the country and leave his wife and children to farm the land. In 1871 he signed the land over to two of his sons, Daniel and Thomas McKay, to farm and to provide for their mother and himself.

    In 1876 they sold the land to Isaac Moss Kenyon (a cousin). David continued to travel visiting his children in Minden and in Plympton. He died on the 28th of April 1892 in Plympton while visiting his children David and John McKay and Rebecca Borrowman. he was in his 85th year.

    He is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Warwich Village, Ontario (no stone). His wife Amelia stayed in the Perth area and died on 31 Jan 1898. She is buried in Rideau Ferry Cemetery (no stone).

    David married Nancy O'Neal on 5 Jan 1936 in Ontario, Canada. Nancy was born in 1814 in Ireland; died on 8 Jun 1849 in Peru, LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
