    Fred E. Humphrey

    Fred E. Humphrey of Flournoy, died, March 8 at his home. He was 76.
    Fred was born April 2, 1926, in Dobbins, he was the youngest of 10 children born to Dave and Kate Humphrey. The family moved to the Flournoy area where he attended local school. After serving in the U.S. Army during W. W. II, he returned to Flournoy and was employed on the Flournoy Ranch until 1948. At that time he began working at Crane Mills as an equipment operator until 1992, upon his retirement when the mill was closed. In addition to his employment with Crane Mills, he spent the last 56 years ranching and raising cattle in the Flournoy, Paskenta area. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren exhibit his livestock at various fairs throughout the state. His favorite past-times were attending the NFR, PBR and the Paskenta Pioneer Days.

    He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Charlotte; Children, Randy & Sharon Humphrey, Ronald Humphrey all of Flournoy, Beverly & Jim Ross of Red Bluff. Carmel & Dave Spaulding of Porterville; grandchildren, Tara & & Bryce Carlson of Lincoln, Hillary Turner of Roseville, Aaron Ross of Red Bluff, Kristin Ross, of Dillion, Mont., Nicki, Cheyenne, Kristin and Daniel Humphrey of Flournoy, Bailey and Tyler Spaulding of Porterville.
    Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 12, at 2:00 p.m. at the Flournoy-Paskenta Cemetery.
    In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund at 101 Pro-Rodeo Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80919 or the Paskenta Cemetery in Paskenta.

    Charlotte Humphrey passed away at her Flournoy home on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008. She was 80.

    She was born on Dec. 4, 1927, in the Flournoy-Paskenta area to Hugh and Neva Luce and was raised on the family ranch in Flournoy.

    Upon graduation from high school, she began working for the United States Forest Service in Paskenta and with Crane Mills. She married Fred Humphrey on Dec. 6, 1947. They continued ranching in the Flournoy-Paskenta area.
    Charlotte was always proud of the cattle produced on the ranch, especially when steers were entered at various fairs and jackpots. Many of which made the championship drive not only locally, but throughout the state.
    Charlotte was quite active in the Flournoy 4-H Club and served as the community leader, and she enjoyed teaching cooking to children. Her grandchildren enjoyed helping Grandma make taffy, divinity and penuche. She was always delighted to furnish divinity for the fall auction to benefit the Paskenta Community Hall. She also enjoyed the time served as director and president of the Tehama County Farm Bureau.
    As an avid rodeo fan, Charlotte, along with family and friends, has attended the National Finals Rodeo after it moved to Las Vegas, Nev. from Oklahoma City, Okla.

    She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Humphrey and two sisters Ardell Pitkin and Barbara Humphrey.

    She is survived by daughters Beverly (Jim) Ross of Red Bluff, Carmel (David) Spaulding of Terra Bella; sons Ronald Humphrey, Randy (Sharon) Humphrey of Flournoy; grandchildren Tara (Bryce) Carlson, Hillary Turner, Nicki Humphrey, Cheyenne Humphrey, Kristin McGarity, Daniel Humphrey, Bailey Spaulding, Tyler Spaulding, Kristin (Chuck) Morris, Aaron Ross (Courtney Tanner); five great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters Arabelle Maitia and Nita Pitkin of Flournoy. She will be greatly missed by all.

    A graveside service will be held on at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Paskenta Cemetery.

    Huge Luce, 83, dies at home

    Hugh Luce, well known Flournoy rancher and horseman, was found dead in his home yesterday. He was 83 years of age and had resided in Glenn and Tehama Counties all his life.
    He was born Nov. 4, 1898 in Newville to pioneer parents, Isaac and Helen Cushman Luce.
    He was a member of Tehama County Farm Bureau and Olivet Lodge, No. 205, F. and A. M.
    He is survived by five daughters, Arabelle Maitia, Nita Pitkin, Charlotte Humphrey and Barbara Humphrey, all of Flournoy, and Ardell Pitkin of Red Bluff; a sister, Marguerite Williams of Corning; 22 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
    His wife, Neva Luce, died June 1980.
    Memorial services will be held in the family plot in Paskenta Cemetery Sunday at 2 p.m. with Olivet Lodge, No. 205 officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Brothers Mortuary. - Transcribed by M

    Neva Luce dies Sunday

    Neva Vernetta Luce, 74, died Sunday morning at her home in Flournoy. She evidently died during her sleep from a heart ailment.
    The well known horsewoman was reported to have taken a long ride the previous day. She was born in Paskenta Oct. 12, 1905, the daughter of Joseph and Orphia Uhl, pioneers of the area.
    She was a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, and of the Flournoy-Paskenta 4-H Riding Club. She and her husband, Hugh, and family were well known in riding circles and often won top honors in parades and competitions.
    She is survived by her husband Hugh of Flournoy, and five daughters, Nita Pitkin, Arabelle Maitia, Charlotte Humphrey and Barbara Humphrey, all of Flournoy and Ardelle Pitkin of Red Bluff; and a brother, M. Boosie Uhl of Corning; 22 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
    Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Hall Brothers Mortuary with Douglas M. Maitia, a grandson officiating. Burial will follow in the Paskenta Cemetery.- Transcribed by M.

    Luce Services to Be Held in Willows On Friday

    Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sweet mortuary in Willows for Isaac D. Luce, prominent rancher and lifelong resident of the Newville district, who died at this home Tuesday morning. The Masonic lodge of Corning of which Luce was one of the oldest members, will participate in the rites.
    A native of Newville, where he was born in 1866, Luce had spent his entire 79 years in that district. He joined the Newville Masonic lodge, which was later consolidated with the lodge at Corning, and held membership in that order for over half a century. He had recently been awarded a 50-year jewel by the Corning lodge.
    Son of pioneer residents of the district, he was one of Glenn county's oldest residents, and one whose life span covered nearly the entire period since this section was first settled.
    Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Helen Luce, and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Tom Ellis, Mrs. Lee Ellis, of Elk Creek; Hugh Luce, Paskenta; Mrs. Evan Williams, Corning, Mrs. Mrs. Cecil Church, Corning, and Lester Luce, Elk Creek. There are also 23 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and two brothers surviving, Zack Luce, of Newville, and Guy Luce, San Francisco.

    Funeral Services For Helen C. Luce, Chrome Pioneer

    Funeral services were held at two last Saturday afternoon at the Sweet Chapel in Willows, for Mrs. Helen C. Luce, 88, native daughter of Glenn county and lifelong resident of the Chrome district. Mrs. Luce passed away Wednesday morning at the Corning Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for the past two months.
    Mrs. Luce was born in the Chrome area west of Orland on June 11, 1873, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Cushman, who migrated to California from New York state in 1860. She was the widow of Isaac D. Luce, who died in 1945.
    Mrs. Luce is survived by 79 descendants including a son, Hugh C. Luce of Flournoy, four daughters, Mrs. Celia E. Ellis, and Mrs. Harriet A. Ellis, both of Elk Creek; Mrs. Marguerite D. Williams of Richfield, and Mrs. Alta T. Cook of Corning, 20 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. A son, Lester Luce, died earlier this year.
