A very quiet but pretty wedding was solemnized, April 23rd, at Ashbyry Methodist Church parsonage when Miss Gladys Chaplin of Glen Tay was united in marriage to Mr Harold Mather of Drummond, the Rev. A. Wilkinson officiating.

The bride looked charming in a navy blue suit of poiret twill, opening over a blouse of pearl grey crepe de chine with hat and gloves to match and wearing the groom's gift, a rope of pearls. After the signing of the register the happy couple left for a short wedding trip en route to Toronto and Niagara and upon returning took up their residence in Drummond.

The bride, who is highly esteemed by all who know her, was the recipient of many beautiful and useful gifts including silverware and cheques. The groom, is well and favourably known, and served in the Great War. Here's wishing Mr. and Mrs. Mather a long and happy married life.

    Notes:

Was christened Henry Harry. He spent his boyhood in Bruce Cty on the 4th Con of Elderslie Twp. after his mother remarried McPherson.

John was 14 and Harry was 10 when his Mother moved to Bruce Cty. as a young man, he earned his living clearing trees for farmers who had purchased forested property in the Chesley and Paisley areas of Bruce County in western Ontario.

They returned to the farm when young men and divided the land. John lived on the farm and Harry purchased a small farm at the south end of the village. Harry later sold his share of the farm to John when he moved to Bathurst around 1903.

Ed MacPherson's obituary in the Calgary Albertan of 23 Jun 1937 states "In the fall of 1883 Ed McPherson, then a lad of 17, along with his half-brother (Harry Mather) and two other young men, went west and contracted the building of the CPR roadbed." According to the Albertan, the grade they built is now the present site of Calgary.

When the work was finished on the railroad Harry Mather returned to Middleville and, according to the Perth Courier of 26 Mar 1886, he married and settled on the Stead farm near Middleville.

Harry later bought Long Bill Keay's (George Ennis') and wrote to JC asking if he wanted to farm. JC farmed for a year and sold it to Allan Keays.

    ?u?From Grandpa (John Cumming) Mather's recollections:?/u?
His father contracted on the western railroad, driving a team of horses pulling a scraper, to level the RR bed through western SK and Eastern AB. Indians stole several teams of horses. He walked to Long Lake, MN to the home of John Mather who lived there because winter was setting in. When he left to come home he was given two five dollar gold pieces for having worked. They were given to a 'Harry Mather' ( some connection to Georgia), who was named for his great? grandfather Mather. ( I haven't identified this individual at this time but it may be Harry Putnam Mather (RIN 1193).

He spent his boyhood in Bruce Cty on the 4th Con of Elderslie Twp. after his mother remarried McPherson.

?u?From Gordon Mather Verbal Recollection 3/29/2014?/u?
Henry's (Harry) Mather's team of horses were stolen by natives passing through the area and he and a MacPherson (or was it a Stead) trailed the horses which were shod south eventually losing the trail. They ended up in Billings MT and decided to head for his uncle's in MN as winter was setting in. They worked there and were paid in gold coins. When Harry Mather from (Maryland, Georgia?) was borned he was named after (Henry, Harry) his uncle.

On a trip to Florida, Uncle Gord, Aunt Jean and Grandpa Mather (JC Mather) were passing through ? and Grandpa when stopped for the evening made contact and as a result the trio were invited for breakfast the next morning. Grandpa, Uncle Gord and Aunt Jean were shown a gold coin, framed and mounted on the wall of his study by Harry Mather, one of Henry's gold coins. Apparently Harry had made a trip north when a boy to meet his namesake and was given the remaining coin by Henry, Harry Mather.

    Notes:

Native of Lauderdale, Scotland. Eldest son of John and Isobel.

John with wife and two daughters born in Scotland, came to Canada in 1820-22 on the ship Commerce as members of the Lanark Society Settlers. They landed in Quebec, traveled by river boat to Brockville, then overland to Perth where they drew lots for land allocations. In 1822, they settled at just south of Middleville, on W1/2 Lot 14 Concession 6 in Lanark Township, Lanark County.

John was a tradesman, a mason. He built both a stone house and a stone barn on the property and later worked with two other masons to build a new two story schoolhouse used from 1860s to 1970.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

    ?u?From Introduction to Mather Genealogy?/u?
John Mather and Robena Lunan emigrated from Scotland as part ofthe Lanark Society
Settlers arOlmd 1820 -1822. They sailed on the ship "Commerce" which landed at
Quebec City and from there by riverboat on the St. Lawrence River to Brockville, from
Brockville overland to Perth which had been settled four years earlier in 1816 by
pensioners from the British army. Lots were drawn at Perth from where they went out
to the piece ofland allotted to them It is said they crossed the Clyde River on a log
near what is now Lanark village. John and Robena settled on 100 acres, the west half
of Lot 14, Concession 6, Lanark Township, Lanark County, which is just south ofthe
    village of Middleville.
John and Robena were married in Oldhamstocks, East Lothian, Scotland, in November 1816. John was the oldest son of John Mather and his wife Isobel Gordon. Robena Lunan was the daughter ofThomas Lunan and his wife Margaret Ainslie ofBerwick County, Scotland. (John and Robena's tombstone in Middleville Greenwood Cemetery indicates they were natives ofLauderdale, Scotland.) They had two daughters born in Scotland who accompanied them to Canada, as well as seven additional children born in Canada for a family ofnine.
is said John actually settled on his farm in 1822 accompanied by two little girls. As his son John was born in 1822 it is probable that Robena stayed elsewhere until she had given birth.
John was a stone mason by trade and built a stone house and bam on his land and later helped two other stone masons build a new two-story stone school house, (8.S. No.6, Lanark -Middleville Public School) used from the 1860's to 1970. It is now a Museum in the village ofMiddleville.

    ?u?From Somerville-Mather Clan History 1947
?/u?John erected a stone house and stone barn on the property. The barn was destroyed by a cyclone and replaced by a wooden structure. This in turn was destroyed by fire in the spring of 1934, and a new barn erected in early summer. The house also suffered in a second cyclone that passed over the property and took a portion of the house in its wake. The other portion remains to mark the ancestral home of these sturdy pioneers.

"Abercrombie Street - Trans Atlantic Bridgeton - sailed with 7 children; wife arrived later.
James Baird came from Glasgow but was originally from Perthshire Scotland. He appears to have sailed with seven children but without his wife, Janet King. She appears to be buried with him at Hopetown so possibly she remained behind and joinde him in 1821. Some women, pregnant or with a sick child, did this." The Lanark Society Settlers, Carol Bennett
