The next settler was James Stewart, who came from Sterlingshire direct to this section. He picked out 100 acres on the 1st concession, where the John McRae mill was at one tiem, and where the John Farquharson farm now is. He was the father of Alexander and John or Horton, Donald of Renfrew, Robert of Bromley, James of Pembroke, and of Mrs. Reid of Grattan; of Mrs Ward and Mrs Eady of Renfrew; and of Mrs McVean of Pembroke. When Mr and Mrs Stewart arrived in Renfrew only two of the family had been born, Alex and John. The rest were Canadian born. The family slept their first night in Renfrew in the Airth home. This was about the year 1830.

Of the members of the family of the pioneer James Stewart of the second line of Horton who became helpful workers in our midst, Mrs. Geo. Eady and Mrs. James Ward have been already mentioned.

John Stewart, who succeeded his father in the old homestead, was with us for a time in his early days when he learned the trade of shoemaking with Wm. Dickson. He became better known to us later on, when he and his like-minded wife became noted for their hospitality and for their abundant kindness to the needy and distressed. Now that she who so lovingly aided him in all these acts of kindness has been called away, he has become a frequent visitor and is so deeply interested in the charitable work and so deeply interested in the charitable work of our town, that he is counted as one of the good helpers on whom we can always rely. True hearted and open handed friend that he is, he is loved by many and respected by all who know him.

    Died:
    John Ferguson, Sept. 12, 1892
One by one, the pioneers of this section of Ontario are passing away and during the past week the angel of death has been busy in our midst. On Monday last, Mr. John Ferguson, one of the first settlers in this section passed peacefully away at the residence of his son, James Ferguson, Reeve of Montague, at the advanced age of 86 years and 3 months. The deceased was born at Johnstown near Paisley, Scotland and emigrated to Canada in 1821 when just 15 years old. He settled first in the township of Dalhousie with his father and mother, but took up land himself in the township of Montague in the year 1832 where he resided to the time of his death. In 1830 he married Anne Stewart who preceded him to the great hearafter some 13 years ago. Two sons and four daughters survive: James, Reeve of Montague and John, Clerk of the same township, the former lives on the old homestead and the latter has a store at Numogate. The daughters are Mrs Tucker of Carleton Place, Mrs. Tetlock, Mrs. Burns of Drummond Township and Mrs Stewart of Renfrew village. He leaves 37 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

The subject of the sketch was therefore one of the most highly respected residents of this section. He was a man of fine physique, clear intellect, and wonderful endurance. He retained all his faculties to the end and within a few days of his demise could read a newspaper without the aid of glasses.

When he first came to this section there was but one shanty where the town of Smiths Falls now stands, and it was his delight on a cold winter's evening to gather a few of his friends together around the hearth fire and relate the many thrilling incidents of pioneer life. On many occasions he carried a bag of flour or other provisions from the town of Perth to his house in the rear of Dalhousie, 25 miles distant when his only guide was the blazed trees. At the building of the Rideau Canal he worked under Colonel By for three years and used to tell many amusing incidents of those early days. He made and retained many further friends and died regretted by all and disliked by none. In religion he was a Presbyterian and in politics a Liberal of the old school, although in latter years when he did vote, he cast it for the Conservative side.

His funeral which took place on Wednesday afternoon last to the cemetary at Numogate was the largest seen in years, thus showing the high esteem in which deceased was held. Reverend C.H. Cooke of St. Andrew's Church conducted the obsequies. The News join in sympathy to mourning relatives and friends.

Jonathan married Ann Stewart. Ann (daughter of John Stewart and Jane Buchanan) was born in 1806 in Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 11 Jul 1879 in Montague Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in McVean Cemetery, Numogate, Montague, Lanark, Ontario, Canada.
