Mr. Robert Miller -
On Sunday, the meancholy news came to the town that Mr. Robert Miller, of Montreal, had died early that morning of paralysis. He had been stricken with paralysis shortly after leaving work on Friday evening, and he survived only till about midnight the next day. The attack was unexpected, and his health had been good prior to that, and the paralytic stroke was wholly unlooked for.

Deceased was born in Perth sixty-six years ago, of Scotch parents, and lived in this town until about twenty-five years ago, when he left for Toronto, but ultimately removbed to Montreal, where he had a position as a machinist with his brothers, Messrs Mitchell Bros.

He was married to Miss Christina Brown, also of this town, and she with one son, Willie, and tree daughters, one married (Mrs. James Thomson), survives. His remains were brought to Perth for burial in elmwood cemetery, Rev. D. Currie, of Knox church, conducting the services.

Mr. Miller's father, George Miller, was killed while acting as a fireman at the burning of the old Roman Catholic church about 1832. He had a machine shop in town, and his firm built the old Fountain fire-engine, the first of its kind in Perth.

Robert married Christine Cameron Brown. Miller - After a lengthened and painful illness, borne with Christian fortitude and resignation, Mrs. Robert Miller, of Montreal, died in that city on Sunday last, and her remains were brought to Perth on Tuesday afternoon to be laid beside those of her late husband, whose death occirred some eight or ten years previously.

Mrs. Miller, whose maiden name was Christina Brown, was one of the once numerous and well known family, of Perth, whose sole representative now living is Miss Ellen Brown, whose home is with her grand nieces, Misses Josie and Jessie Armstrong, Stewart Square, town.

The brothers were William, James and Allan; and the sisters, besides Miss Brown, were: Mrs. James Allan, Mrs. James Lafferty, Mrs. Robert Adison, Mrs John S. Hart, and Mrs. W.H. Grant, names once so familiar in this town and country.

Deceased was married to Mr. Robert Miller, another member of a prominent and quite numerous family of Perth, all of whom moved away from here years ago, and the survivors of whom are resident in Montreal and Toronto. The father of this family was a foundry man and machinist, and founded what is still recollected by our older people, as the Miller foundry, in the stone structure now used as a coal shed by Mr. Henry Taylor.

The family of deceased were: George, who died in his youth; another brother, and three daughters, Mrs. Dunn, Mrs Thomson, and Miss Charlotte. The latter and Mrs Dunn, Mr. Dunn and Kenneth Miller, son of Mr George Miller, of Montreal, accompanied the remains to Perth. The casket was taken from the train to Elmwood cemetery and laid in the vault.

Rev. Dr. Currie, of Knox Church, conducted the services. The remembrances of friends and church institutions, in the way of flowers, wreaths, sprays, etc. was quite remarkable, and a justs tribute to one whom Christian graces, and personal qualities entitled her to the deepest tokens of affection and esteem.

The only member of the Perth Fire Department in it's 200 years to lose his life on duty.

"Fire and Loss of Life.
On the evening of Friday last, 19th inst., about eight o'clock an alarm of fire was given, when it was found that the old Catholic Chapel was in flames. The building had been locked up and unoccupied for some time, and there can be no doubt but the fire was the work of an incendiary, as a pile of pine boards or rails was found inside by those who first entered, in which the fire had been kindled; and an old door was found leaning up against the wall of the building, under one of the windows, which was raised, and through which it was evident the incendiary had made his ingress and egress. The fire engines were speedily on the ground, but the chapel being of wood, and water difficult to be got, the flames had made such headway that it was impossible to save the building, which was burned down; although good service was done in preventing the flames spreading to the adjoining houses. The new English church was at one time in considerable danger. An investigation was held by C. G. Sache, Esq., Coroner and a jury of citizens, but up to the time we write no information has been elicited to the discovery of the guilty party.

It is with extreme regret that we have to add that Mr. George Miller, of the firm of Murray, Miller & Co., of this town, lost his life on the occasion. He was exerting himself to save property, when a heavy piece of burning timber fell out from the building and struck him in the head, crushing him to the ground; and he died the following afternoon in consequence of the injuries he received. He was one of our oldest citizens and was universally esteemed and respected. In losing him, Perth has lost a valuable member of society, and his untimely and melancholy end has cast a gloom on our citizens generally.

A correspondent requests us to add the following: It is due to the memory of the lamented deceased, that during the troublesome times of 1837-'38, that he volunteered and joined the Perth Guards; done duty and was drilled under Col. Fraser, that afterwards, under the same officer, he joined the Perth Volunteers and went to Toronto, Kingston and Gananoque; and during the whole period he set a good example to his associates for steadiness, diligence and zeal for the services, ever ready and cheerfully doing his duty; and that often under difficulties and many unavoidable privations.

The funeral took place on Tuesday and was one of the largest we have ever witnessed in Perth. The Firemen (deceased being a member of No. 2 Co.), appeared in mourning badges, and places of business generally were closed, out of respect for deceased, while the procession was passing. Setting fire to old and unoccupied buildings has been practiced in this town for several years back, until at length the destruction of property has been followed by the destruction of human life. The miscreant who fired the Catholic Chapel has murder resting on his head."

By the Montreal papers, we notice the death in that city, at an advanced age, of a former resident of Perth - Charlotte Donaldson, relict of Mr. George Miller. Deceased was a native of Scotland, and lived in Perth for many years. She was married to Mr. George Miller, also born in scotland, who kept a foundry and machine shop here in what was known after as the Bolt factory, now Mr. H. Taylor's coal storeroom. The husband was killed in the fifties at a fire which consumed the old and then unused Roman Catholic Church, on the sand hill,the accident happening while he was assisting to put out the conflagation, which was held to be the work of an incendiary.

Their children were: Robert, who died in Montreal a few years aga, George and Charles, now an iron-manufacturing firm, Montreal; Mrs. (Dr.) Eberson, Mrs. J.G. Cormack, North Bay; Charlotte, Montreal; Mrs. John Supple, Pembroke; and Donnie, Montreal. She was in her ninetieth year. In religion she was Presbyterian.
