    John Adams moved with his father from Simsbury, Conn., before 1790 to Duanesburg, Schenectady (then Albany) Co., and about 1795 to Onondaga Co. N.Y., settling in that part of the Town of Marcellus which became the Town of Skaneateles on 26 Feb. 1830. He was considered one of the first settlers and a very prominent citizen. The records of of the Post Office Department in the National Archives in Washington "show that a post office was established at Rhodes, Onondaga County, New York, on February 28, 1828, with John Adams appointed as its only postmaster. It was discontinued on August 15, 1843." John Adams served in the War of 1812 enlisting at Skaneateles on 8 Aug. 1814, for the term of three months as a private in the company commanded by Capt. Moody R. Freeman in the 102nd Regiment of New York Militia commanded by Col. Hugh W. Dobbins. John Adams served his community as a justice of the peace and hence was entitled to be called 'Squire.".

    In the Name of God, Amen -- the 23rd Day of July 1784, I, Lucy Adams of Simsbury in the County of Hartford, being advanced in age and in a low State of Body by helth [sic] but of sound mind and memory, thanks to god their for, and Calling to mind my one [own] mortality and knowing that it is appointed for all persons once to die, do see Cause to make this my Last will and Testament
    and first of all, I comit my Soul to God in Christ and my Body to the Earth, to be buried in a Decent Christian manner, nothing Doubting but I shall receive the same again by the Power of god at the general Resurrection at the Last Day, and as Touching such wordly [worldly] Estate as it hath Pleased god to give me in this Life, after Just Debts, sick bed Expenses, etc., are paid, I give and dispose of in the following manner and form:
    Imprimises -- I give and Bequeath to my Beloved son ?b?Oliver Adams?/b? all my right and Title I have in the Stoney Swamp, so called, lying near the Dwelling House of Samuel Adams, to him and his heirs for Ever.
