Lila was secretary-treasurer for many years and was always willing to help with special activities. She was an auxiliary member of the WMS. They both enjoyed attending Adult Fellowship and Senior Citizen gatherings. They were also directors of the McDonald's Corners Agricultural Society for many years. Eldred was a member of the Oddfellows for 62 years.
Eldred will be missed by his sisters and brothers, Doris, Laura, Elmer and Stanley. He is predeceased by George, Marion and Gerald. Lila was predeceased by her brother Wilbert.

Many friends called at Blair and Son Funeral Home and attended their funerals at Elphin Church. The services were conducted by Rev. Linda Bell. Rev. Steve Stewart read the scriptures for his grandmother. They had six of their grandsons as pallbearers. Burials were at Crawford Cemetery.

?/b?Ashby - At an early hour on Saturday morning, August 18?sup?th?/sup?, after a lingering illness, death came to Mr. William Ashby in the War Memorial Hospital, Perth, where he had gone for treatment a few weeks previously.
Deceased, who was in his 38?sup?th?/sup? year, enlisted for overseas service in the 130?sup?th?/sup? Lanark and Renfrew Battalions in December 1915, and while in camp in England was transferred to the 3?sup?rd?/sup? Canadian Battalion. He went over to France in November 1916 and served in the trenches until January 23?sup?rd?/sup? of the following year, when in answer to call for volunteers to join a bombing party in the Vimy section he offered his services and during the night of above received a number of wounds, one of which resulted in the loss of an eye. He was invalided home in September 1917 and since then has been in failing health. Thus, another name is added to the list making eight in all from McDonald's Corners who gave their lives for King and Country. Besides his widow, whose maiden name was Ellen Duncan, he leaves to mourn his loss two children, Lila and Wilbert: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ashby of Fallbrook; three brothers, Robert of Fallbrook; Archie and Russell in the west; and four sisters - Mrs. John Lake of Lanark; Mrs. John Mathers (sic) of Braeside; Mrs. Dan Nichols of Carleton Place and Maggie at home.
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. A.M. Little in Knox Church on Monday afternoon at two o'clock and very largely attended. Among those in attendance were Lieut. Col. T.R. Caldwell, O.B.E.; Major J.A. Hope, D.S.O. M.C.; Lieut. W.R. Strike; Flight-Lieut. F.K. Hope; Bandmaster Keays and Philip Kelly, representing the Lanark and Renfrew Battalion and G.W.V.A. The body was borne to its last resting space in the Highland Cemetery and after the burial service the Last Post was sounded by Bandmaster Keays of Perth. Members of Court Stewart, No. 481, C.O. F., of Fallbrook were the pallbearers. Among the numerous floral offerings laid upon the bier was a wreath from Court Stewart of which deceased was a member. Much sympathy is felt for the family in their sad bereavement. -Era.

She was a midwife and nurse to many of the neighbours, grew a most bountiful garden, loved to read books, and could do all kinds of handiwork, knitting, crocheting, etc.

    Notes:

Dad's database had Mary Ann. Mom's notes, based on Grandma's notes indicate 'Elizabeth' Gillespie, from near Brockville, ON. It also indicates that they were married in Caleraine, Ireland and later lived in Pennsylvania where Grandma's Grandmother had a large dry goods store. It was thought they were United Empire Loyalists. Her Grandfather had been in the American War, and subsequently was in poor health and died at age 49 of lung trouble.

name indicated elsewhere as Mary A. Gillespie
