    Died:
James Halliday was born to John Halliday and Margaret Johnstone at Boreland, Hutton Parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, being baptized there on January 29, 1814. He died on October 3, 1909, at Perth, Ontario, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery at that place.

At the age of eighteen months he was taken to Canada to settle on the Scotch Line near Perth, Ontario. There he attended the elementary school taught by his father.
On January 29, 1839, he married Janet Allan, a daughter of Francis Allan who had been one of the pioneers on the Scotch Line. A family of twelve was born to the union, two of whom died in infancy. Janet Allan died in 1859 (at the age of seventy. Subsequently James married twice more, to Elizabeth Crawford on March 13, 1891, and upon her death to Sarah Ann Turner on December 8, 1899.

James continued to farm throughout his active life, living on his father's homestead. He bought the homestead in 1846, paying his father ?330 for the freehold. In 1876 he sold the farm to James Armour for $5,600. The plot of land in which his parents and two siblings were buried was "reserved" from the sale, and right of access to it by members of the Halliday family was guaranteed in perpetuity. In the same year he retired to Perth where he resided until his death.

He took an active interest in municipal affairs, being Reeve of North Burgess for a number of years and the Township's representative on the County Council. His obituary in the Perth Courier stated: "In politics he was a Conservative and in religion a Presbyterian". This religious affiliation must have existed in four different Perth congregations. From 1817 to 1830, it was First Presbyterian from 1830 to 1836, St. Andrew's Church of Scotland; from 1836 to 1845, Reformed Presbyterian (Cameronian). In 1845 Knox Church was established in Perth, a congregation of the Free Presbyterian Church, and James became a charter member of it. He was a member of its Board of Management until a few years before his death and the teacher of the congregation's Bible Class for many years.

Upon his death in 1909, his obituary in the local paper, after recording events in his life, summed up his character in the words, "He was a man of common-sense ideas, practical in everything and his opinion was always sought for and valued''.

James married Jane C. Allan on 29 Jan 1839 in Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Jane (daughter of Francis Allan and Jannet Cowie) was born on 6 May 1820 in Bathurst Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 3 Jul 1890 in Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Fisher?Died, at Bathurst, on Monday, 4th June, Mr. Donald Fisher, aged 87.

Another and among the last of the original settlers of Bathurst, Donald Fisher, died at his residence on the 5th Line of that township on Monday, 4th June at the advanced age of 87 years. The deceased was born in the district of Balquidder, Perthshire, Scotland and his forefathers sleep in the same chapel where lay the bones of the famed Rob Roy McGregor. Mr. Fisher came to Canada with his parents in the year 1818 when a youth of 11 and endured the privations and hardships of pioneer life in Canada happily unknown to the present generation. He was married to Christina McNee (sister of Messrs. Duncan and Peter McNee of this locality) whom he survived about 30 years. He left three sons Peter who lives near Chesley, Ontario; Duncan of Athens, Leeds County; and Donald on the farm and in whose place he died. The deceased was a Liberal and a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church of Perth and a very regular meeting attendant until deafness and other bodily infirmities kept him away. His remains were buried besides those of his wife and children in the old Presbyterian burying ground in Perth, the funeral being attended by a large concourse of neighbors. Rev. A. H. Scott conducted the service.

    Occupation:
According to research on the Cowie family in Scotland done by Melissa Howe-Hamilton and transmitted by e-mail of 9 Sept, 1996, Francis Allan was a tax collection clerk in Edinburgh when he married Janet Cowie in 1813.

Family lore had it that Francis Allan was a Writer to the King's Signet; however, recent contact with the society of writers in Scotland reveals that his name is not found on their membership list.

Following the birth of their first son, James, in Sept, 1814, the family emigrated from Grennock, Scotland to Canada, arriving in July 1815 (settled on the Scotch Line near Perth). The 9-month old James died during passage. Other sources say they spent their first winter in Brockville and travelled to Perth in spring 1816.

In Canada, Francis Allan became Crown Land Agent in the Perth/Bathurst area and was responsible for settling accounts between Archibald McNab (The McNab) and his disgruntled and maligned settlers in the McNab Township area. Francis Allan was also Postmaster in Perth for some time and had been appointed Superintendant of Common Schools sometime prior to his death in 1844.

A post office called Perth Upon Tay was established right away in 1816 with the man in charge of the settlement for the government, Daniel Daverne, as post master. When Daverne absconded with funds, which were in his care, he was replaced in 18?? (illegible, maybe 1830). Perth-Upon-Tay now became simply Perth. A letter by Taylor in the Ontario Archives of P. Robinson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, York, written on January 31, 1831, is postmarked with a small double circle broken by Perth with the date written in red. In 1837 Francis Allan took over as crown lands agent and postmaster in Perth.

Janet Cowie's younger brother, Robert Cowie (b. 1806/7), stonemason, emigrated to Canada in 1827 to join Francis and Janet.

    Died:
Died On Sunday morning last, after a short illness, ?b?Francis Allan?/b?, Esq. Postmaster of this place, age 51. The death of Mr. Allan is a source of great grief to his numerous friends and family. The deceased held the office of District Land Agent and performed the duties thereof satisfactorily as well as that of Postmaster. He had also lately been appointed by the District Council to the important trust of County Superintendent of Common Schools which, had he been spared, we have no doubt he would have performed. His demise is sincerely regretted generally and a loss to this place. The funeral takes place today at 2:00.

    Died:
    Perth Courier, July 29, 1892

Fraser?Died, on Friday, 22nd July Mrs. Francis Allan Fraser, relict of the late James Fraser, aged 94 years, 2(?)3(?) months.

    Elsewhere in the same paper:

On Friday last there died at the residence of Mrs. M. R. Dodds at the great age of 94 years Mrs. James Fraser, for some years before her death the only survivor among the pioneer band who settled in the Perth section of Lanark County. The deceased, whose maiden name was Jane Cowie, was born in the village of Corstorphine near Edinburgh, Scotland in the year 1798 and when 17 years old came with her parents (actually her husband, infant son and her brother) across the Atlantic arriving at Brockville in 1815. Next year the family made their way to Perth coming by the ferry and it was worthy of note that she and a companion were the first white women who ever crossed the Rideau River. The bridge was simply two logs lashed together with basswood bark side by side. With most of the other settlers who arrived then, the family settled on a farm on the Scotch Line then simply areas of unbroken forest. The trials and hardships of these early settlers were very great and many succumbed to the privations they could not endure but the deceased had a strong constitution that carried her through them all and after a time comfort and comparative affluence succeeded the hardships of her family life and made the burdens less severe.

Mrs. Fraser married two times. Her first husband was the late Francis Allan, also a native of Scotland and to them were born several children, some of whom are or were among the best known residents of this locality. They were John Allan of Snow Road and Francis Allen and James Allan, merchant, Perth. Robert Allan, Bathurst, William Allan, mill owner, North Burgess, Alexander Allan, hardware merchant, Smith's Falls, and the late Isaac Allan, hardware merchant Perth and the late Mrs. James (Rev.) Gray, wife of the Presbyterian minister of Kingston and Mrs. Calvin Holliday, County Perth and the late Mrs. James Holliday of Perth and Mrs. M. R. Dobbie of Perth are also children.

By her second marriage she had no children. Mrs. Fraser was a member of the Presbyterian Church for over 70 years and took the communion up to a few years ago when her system both bodily and mentally began to break up and to make ready for the great change.

The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon Rev. James Ross conducting the services and her remains were laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery. The deceased saw many generations of young and old laid in the graveyards and cemeteries here and finally when her own time came she had made herself ready for the closing sleep and the awakening hereafter.

    Died:
"On the last day of September a man named Malcolm Fisher, living in Bathurst, sent for me to come and see him. I found him weak and apparently dying, but I could get little information as the state of his soul. O that men were wise enough to prepare for death before it come: for the sake of his poor wife and children I wrote his will, and with some difficulty got it signed, for even this matter he had not attended to, in the time of health. He died about an hour after I left him."
