Sylvia Mae Padgett, 76, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at her home. She was born June 26, 1938 in Long Island, NY to the late Sylvester N. and Laura E. (Miller) Hess. She worked at Holiday Nursing Home and Deaconess Hospital, in food services for 26 years. She loved her five cats and her dog, Jessie.
Sylvia is survived by three brothers,
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Oak Hill Cemetery. -

Valier Man is Burned to Death
Sylvester Hess, 72, died at 4:00 pm Friday in a fire which destroyed his home in Valier. He was alone at the time of the tragedy.

The body has been taken to the Brayfield Funeral Home in Sesser. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Mr. Hess was born April 10, 1894 at Caledonia, PA, the son of George and Carrie (Sheasley) Hess.

He was married to Laura Miller, who survives. He is also survived by three sons, George W. Hess and David C. Hess, both of Bettendorf, IA, and Gerald W. Hess, at home; a daughter, Miss Sylvia Mae Hess of Evansville, Ind.; three sisters, Miss Ethel Belle Hess of Williamsport, PA; Mrs Beatrice Gray and Mrs Etta Russell, both of Augusta, GA.

Mr. Hess was a member of the Valier Methodist church.

Sylvester married Laura Evelyn Miller in 1937 in Cobourg, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada. Laura (daughter of William Miller and Louisa May Younge) was born on 1 Jun 1912 in Elphin, Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 26 Sep 2000 in Bettendorf, Scott County, Iowa, United States; was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. Laura E. Hess, 88, Bettendorf, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Iowa Masonic Home, Bettendorf.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 am Saturday at St. John's United Methodist Church, Davenport. No visitation will be held. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Ind. Runge Mortuary, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on June 1, 1912, Ontario, Canada. She was a daugher of William and Louise Mae (Young) Miller. she married Sylvester Hess in 1937 in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. He preceded her in death in 1967.

Mrs. Hess previously was employed as a Nurses Aide for Homemaker Services in Davenport. She retired in 1972. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and the Davenport Women's Club and had served as secretary for the Davenport Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons. She enjoyted working crossword puzzles.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Sylvia Padgett, Evansville, Ind., sons David Hess, Pleasant Valley, Iowa, George W. Hess,Davenport, and Dr Jerry Hess, Bettendorf.; eight grandchildren' and three great grandchildren. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Roy.

John was born in North Burgess Township, Lanark County, Ontario, the son of John Miller and Sarah McLelland. In 1859 he was married to Mary Wilson, daughter of John Wilson and Mary Forgie of North Burgess. John died in Balderson, Ontario at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.C. McGregor.

Miller
At the advanced age of 90 years and five months Mr. John Miller, for 64 years a well-known and prosperous farmer and drover of Elphin, passed away at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. McGregor at Balderson on Thursday, April 15th, Mrs. McGregor being one of three daughters of deceased. The late Mr. Miller was a native of Burgess township, his father having settled in that township after coming to Canada from Ireland.

At the early age of 17 he embarked in the droving business and before Perth had a railway connection with the outside world, drove cattle, sheep and other livestock by road to Prescott from which point shipments were made by boat to Montreal.
