    Died:
    Mr. Malcom Fisher
By the death of Mr. Malcolm Fisher, of Bathurst, which took place on Tuesday last, we believe that the last opioneer settler of this district has passed away to the hearafter. Deceaced a the age of four years, came to this country with his parents, from Balquidder, Perthshire, Scotland, in 1817, when the family settled on what is now know as the Cunningham farm, Bathurst. He however, launched out for himself in early youth, by the assistance of his parents, and at the age of fourteen years came into possession of the farm at Harper owned by him at his death, and which he occupied for the long period of seventy-one years.

He married to Miss Margaret McNie, sister of the late Mr. John McNie, of Bathurst and Carleton Place, who died before him. They had eleven of a family - four sons and seven daughters - of whom all survive but one. They are: John, Forest, Ont; Archibald, Wyoming, Ont; Donald, Brigden, Ont; Malcolm (dead); Mrs. William Brownlee, Dalhousie; Mrs Robert Allan, Scotch Line; Mrs. John Anderson, Bathurst; Mrs. Hophal McFarlane and Mrs. Andrew Steels, Forest, Ont; Mrs. Thomas Harper, Fleming, Aseba, and Mrs D. Campbell, Ottawa.

Mr. Fisher died of cancer, and he bore the ravages of this dreadful disease with characteristic fortitude and patience. He was a true Highlander, and retained the Gaelic of his youth till his death. He was a man of strong individuality and had his full share of courage and determination. He was a Presbyterian and a life-long Liberal and a subscriber to the Courier almost since its beginning.

His funeral took place to Elmwood Cemetery, Perth, onThursday, and not withstanding the wet day, was a large one.

    Location:
During their stay there, late in the autumn of 1815, a party of explorers from this colony visited the present site of the town of Perth to "spy out the land" for their kindred, before they could commit themselves to a position from which, once taken, it would be difficult to recede. One of these was Mr. Thomas Cuddie, grandfather of Mrs. George Templeton, of Calgary, Alberta, and he it was who cut down the first tree in the proposed settlement. He selected a farm on the Scotch line, and died in Perth not many years ago. The party camped the first night of their arrival in the locality on the right or west bank of the River Tay, very near the south end of the old stone bridge that stood so long on Gore street. They made a bush camp almost in front of the spot where Spalding & Stewart's distillery stands, cutting down an immense elm tree for the purpose. The stump of this tree remained as a sort of landmark for many years. This camp became the temporary headquarters of the prospectors till they decided upon the locality about them as the best procurable in the district, when they returned to their comrades at Brockville, all of whom came on and settled in the townships of Bathurst, North Burgess, North Elmsley, a few in Drummond, and some within the present limits of the town of Perth, though the greater number located in the immediate neighborhood on what is known as "The Scotch Line," forming the boundary between Bathurst and North Burgess townships.

The date of the first land taken up was April 17th, 1816, and among the pioneer settlers were John Halliday, lot A; Alexander McFarlane and Jas. McDonald, Lot 1; William McGilvery and Alexander Cameron, lot 2; John Brash and William Rutherford, lot 3; John Miller and Robert Gardner, lot 4; James Drysdale and John Allan, lot 5; John Ferrier and Robert Barber, lot 8, all in the 10th concession of North Burgess. Sergt. Thomas Brooke settled on the 9th concession.

    Died:
"On the last day of September a man named Malcolm Fisher, living in Bathurst, sent for me to come and see him. I found him weak and apparently dying, but I could get little information as the state of his soul. O that men were wise enough to prepare for death before it come: for the sake of his poor wife and children I wrote his will, and with some difficulty got it signed, for even this matter he had not attended to, in the time of health. He died about an hour after I left him."
