John Pollok of Craigton purchased the property in 1707 and built a farm house and outbuildings in 1709. Fasyd [spelled thus] is marked on Timothy Pont's map of the Baronee of Renfrew in 1590.

In 1909 Sir Wallace Fairweather purchased the Fa'side property from the Raeside family and in 1911 other adjacent lands from Sir Michael Shaw Stewart.He commissioned the architectural firm of Burnet and Boston to build Fa'side House.

The 1709 buildings still stand alongside the 1911 house, built to resemble a traditional Scottish keep.

Balgray House in Newton Mearns, thought to have been built in the late 19th Century, is now a category 'B' listed building. It was one of the last of the Mearns "big houses", still standing in farmland on the western edge of the parish.

The house and lands of Balgray was an ancient inheritance of a family called Park. In 1603, Alexander Park alienated these lands to David Pollock of Lee. In 1684, James Pollock was the owner of Balgray and he was fined for supporting the Covenanters. Eventually Balgray was sold to Thomas Pollock who was a wealthy merchant from Glasgow and of a branch of the Pollock family descended from a younger brother of the family from the reign of Queen Mary. In 1818, Thomas Pollock owned the lands and it is known that at this time a small bleachfield was in business in Balgray, employing twenty people. However, by the early 1850s the business had closed. In 1831, the house was unoccupied and had been so for some time, it is not clear if this is the same house that stands today. In 1905, it was the property of James C Ferguson Pollock of Pollock Castle (Upper Pollock).

Arthurlie is an area of the town of Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, Scotland.

History of Arthurlie
The lands of Arthurlie were held in medieval times by the Stewart family, a branch of the noble Stewarts of Darnley. Later the lands became the property of Allan Pollock, Esq. and remained in his family for several generations before being inherited by Gavin Ralston of Woodside in Beith.[1] The area has long been associated with the legends of King Arthur.[2] The name means 'Arthur's meadow.'[3] Arthurlie was a barony of considerable extent, however it eventually came to be purchased by Henry Dunlop Esq. in 1818 from Gavin Ralston, a distant relative.

The Dunlop family ran Gateside Cotton Mill under the name of James Dunlop & Son. The old house was torn down and Arthurlie House was erected with the old gardens extended and remodelled in 1818.[2] The estate remained in the hands of the Dunlop family until about 1938. It was a Mr. Charles Taylor who discovered the ancient Arthurlee Cross being used as a gatepost on the estate and persuaded Henry Dunlop to rescue it.[4]

This stone is a 10th - 11th century cross-shaft[6] made from a very hard and compact sandstone, and it now stands at NS 4997 5854, by the roadside, set in a modern rectangular base and protected by railings.

The cross measures 2.2 m (7 ft 3 in) high, 0.5 m (1 ft 8 in) wide, and 0.2 m (8 in) thick and is in good condition except that one face is badly worn. One side had an iron ring indented into it, almost flush with the surface, this being done during its time when it was being used as a gate post after it was no longer used as a bridge.[5] In the 1857 Name Book[7] it was believed that its original site had been at NS 4968 5813 in a field called Cross-stane-park.[8] In 1795 it was acting as a footbridge over a stream in the Colinbar Glen area at the bottom of the Cross-stane-park (NS 497 580).[9] It stayed there long enough to be worn smooth on one face; it was seen by the OS surveyor in 1857

In approximately 1870 it was erected in the grounds of Arthurlee House at NS 4979 5814 as shown in the photograph. Sometime prior to 1942 it was moved yet again by Barrhead Council to its present position.

The stone is said to be associated with Arthur, King of the Britons. Locally it was said to mark Arthur's grave or a conspicuous leader of that name.[2]
