Earl used up what cash he had and started to farm just when you couldn't make any money no matter how hard you worked."

Dad and Mother were living with Gord and had bought a new stove in January 1926. "The stove was new but the chimney was old and in bad shape. Mother was home alone when a fire started in the chimney and Mother couldn't get it out. The neighbours came, but having had little experience with fires and remembering that a dresser was full of bullets brought back from France as souvenirs. In fact I think the bullets had started to go off. So only a few pieces of furniture was carried out and it was badly water soaked and harmed by sitting out in the snow. But they rented the farm just south of the old house and moved in and began to farm the two farms."

1 Be careful to entertain strangers. You might by chance be entertaining angels unaware.
    2. Never harm a little child. It would be beter for you to have a millstone tied around your neck and thrown into the sea.
    3. Never call your brother a fool. He who calls his brother a fool will burn in hell's fire.

    Location:
"When Grandmother Small left Mother the farm it had a couple of barns and a house too small for a big family. Dad was a good carpenter and loved that work. He built us a very nice frame house with four bedrooms upstairs, a living room, hall, dining room, kitchen and pantry and two bedrooms downstairs. It was a lovely home with lots of fruit and flowering trees. I loved that home but when we moved to Bothwell in 1914 I never saw it again. The people who bought it managed to burn it. The reason for trading was to be near a high school. It was too expensive to board children in Sarnia. We moved to Bothwell and in August 1914 the war broke out in Europe. Gord and Earl had some military training in Niagara-on-the-Lake so they enlisted at once.

    Notes:

(Research):I am descended from Janet Lyle and John Miller's son David Miller. His daughter, Agnes, is my great-grandmother. I don't know anything about the Main family other than what you know.

I visited Janet Lyle's place of birth last year. Ironmacannie Mill is exactly that, a grain mill with a miller's cottage at the side, in Balmaclellan Parish, Kirkudbright, Scotland. Her father was obviously the miller on the estate. I don't know where he came from, but I do know Janet's mother, Margaret Halliday, was a local girl.

Many Scots migrated to the US, Canada, and Australia in the early 1800s due to the enclosure acts in Britain. Our relatives migrated to Dalhousie Township in Lanark County, Ontario where many Scots immigrated in 1821.

John and Janet moved in 1836 to Lot 4, Concession 3, Sarnia Township, Lambton County, Ontario in 1836. John bought 50 acres from the local landowner Malcolm Cameron. He was the first to clear the land of the forest and later built a log house and stable on the plot. In 1855, they moved again when he bought 100 acres at Lot 4, Concession 4, Sarnia Township. Again, he had to clear the land of the virgin forest (but now he was 52 years old).

John died of heart disease in 1884. I don't know where he was buried. I know where Janet is buried, though. She is buried in the Irwin Cemetery. It is a tiny, country cemetery near the corner of Confederation Road and Brigden Sideroad in Sarnia. Her headstone spells her name as Jenet.

    Sincerely,
    Living van Hoogenhuize
