"DOUGLAS, James Stuart, 75, son of Lewis W. Douglas, horseman, cattleman, rancher, banker, civic leader, sculptor, artist, and husband, passed away Monday, March 31, 1997. Four generations of the Douglas family have been in Arizona in the banking and mining industries. James Stuart continued this tradition and added ranching, as well. He had a love for the desert, the outdoors, horses and cattle throughout his whole life, and enjoyed them immensely. It is difficult to mention a board or activity in which he was not involved during his life in Tucson as a banker, and Tucson resident. In 1947, he started his career in Southern Arizona Bank within which he rose to president and chief executive officer. As a prominent member of the Tucson business community, he served as president of the Development Authority for Tucson Expansion ("DATE"), founding organization for the current Greater Tucson Economic Council. He was also a past president of Junior Achievement of Tucson, the Tucson Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Arizona Bankers Association, past metro-chairman of the National Alliance of Businessmen, and past chairman and president of the Tucson United Way Fund Drive. In 1970, he was named Tucson's Man of the Year by the downtown Sertoma Club, and elected State Man of the Year of the Sertoma Clubs of Arizona. In 1972, he received Man of the Year from City of Hope. His other civic contributions include the Tucson Airport Authority and the Advisory Council of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. One of the most rewarding activities was his membership in the American Society of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John in Jerusalem. He was also a charter member of the George C. Marshall Association. James Stuart Douglas was an indomitable promoter for the City of Tucson during his time here. Prior to that, he served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant. While serving in World War II he received the Air Medal, Three Oak Leaf Clusters and three Battle Stars during his 21 months of service in the European Theater. Prior to that, he attended Groton School from which he graduated. He then attended Amherst College for one year, until joining the Army. He was preceded in death by his oldest son, James Stuart Douglas III and his survived by his son, Peter Hazard Douglas; two daughters, Bronwyn McGregor Douglas Rubenstein and Morgan Peace Douglas; Mary Peace Hazard Douglas, mother of their children; his loving grandchildren, Summer and Megan Douglas, Neil and David Rubenstein and Philip Rosenberg. James was attached to his life in the Arizona desert ? especially the grasslands of Sonoita ? and to the horseman's way of life. He will be missed by all who loved him. A memorial service will be held at his residence on Friday, April 4th at 9:00 a.m. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to United States Dressage Federation, 130 North Tenth, Lincoln, Nebraska 68508."

After a short battle with cancer, she has moved on to her new life of bliss. Mary Peace was an active member in the Southern Arizona community for over 70 years of her life. She was born in New York City but was raised mostly in Saunderstown, Rhode Island with her family. James Stuart Douglas, Jr. (1867? 1949), popularly known as Rawhide Jimmy, was a Canadian-American businessman and mining executive.

Douglas was the son of James Douglas, a Canadian mining engineer and executive. Born in Quebec, Jimmy Douglas grew up in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where his father managed the Chemical Copper Company. Douglas left home at 17 and moved west to Manitoba, where he homesteaded. Suffering from asthma, he moved to the Arizona Territory, in the United States, in the hope that the drier climate might provide relief.

After a year in Sulpher Springs Valley, where he cultivated strawberries, he moved to Bisbee at his father's request to work as an assayer for the Copper Queen Mine.

In 1892 Douglas moved to Prescott to work for the Commercial Mining Company, an affiliate of the Phelps Dodge mining company. Eight years later he was transferred to Sonora, Mexico, to manage the copper mine and smelter at Pilares and Nacozari; and directed construction of a railroad from Douglas, Arizona to Nacozari. While at Pilares, he acquired his nickname, "Rawhide Jimmy", because of his technique of using rawhide to protect the rollers on mining equipment. Afterward, he moved to Cananea, Sonora, to manage the copper operations there. His tenure was marked by riots and labor problems, which were endemic to the Cananea mines.

In 1912, Douglas returned to central Arizona, where he took an option on the United Verde Extension (UVX) property, a speculative venture to find the down-faulted extension of the great "United Verde" ore body near Jerome, Arizona. In 1914, with funds near exhaustion, an exploration drift cut bonanza copper ore. The UVX became a profitable mine. During 1916 alone, the mine produced $10 million worth of copper, silver and gold, of which $7.4 million was profit.[3] The UVX paid $55 million in dividends during its life (1915? 1938), making Douglas a wealthy man.

In 1939, Douglas retired to Canada, where he died of heart failure in 1949.

Douglas' Jerome mansion is open to the public as the Jerome State Historic Park.

Douglas' son, Lewis W. Douglas, who also entered the mining business, went on to a successful political career as a Congressman from 1927? 33; and the Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1947? 51). The copper-roofed cottage on the hillside adjacent to the Douglas Mansion was built as a wedding present for Lewis.

James married Josephine Leah Williams. Josephine (daughter of Lewis Williams and Harriet M.) was born on 20 Jul 1872 in Hancock, Houghton County, Michigan, United States; died on 6 Jul 1941 in Los Angeles County, California, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
