    Death of Mrs James Watt
    The funeral took place Monday afternoon from the home of her daughter, Mrs Gordon Hanna, Blakeney, of the Mrs James Watt, pioneer of Ramsay township, who died early Sunday morning, Interment was in the cemetery at Middleville. Born 80 years ago in Ramsay, deceased, whose maiden name was Jean Wilson Metcalfe was the daughter of the late Hugh Metcalfe and his wife Jean McLean. In 1885 she married James Watt, and for a time they farmed in Lanark township and later in Ramsay. Mr Watt died three years ago. Surviving, of a family of eight, are three daughters and four sons, Mrs John Barr, of Darling; Mrs Alex. McInnis, of Lanark; Mrs Gordon Hanna, of Blakeney; James, of Lanark; John, of Ramsay; Laughlin, of Lanark, and Robert, of Ramsay. Of her immediate family of twelve, only two brothers survive Dr. A.A. Metcalfe, of Almonte, and Alex. of Ramsay.

    Few men were better known and more highly respected than Mr Hugh Metcalf, of the 8th line of Ramsay, whose death was announced on Wednesday, at the age of 81. is death was not altogether unexpected. A decline set in last fall, from which he rallied a little this spring, but later acute indigestion seized him and finally dropsy, terminating his life. A man of sterling character and of superior education for his day, he held a foremost place among the early residents of Ramsay. e served in public capacities for several years as township councillor and school trustee. In politics he was an ardent Conservative, and in religion a Presbyterian. The deceased was born at Prescott in 1821, his parents being of English parentage. When but a year old his parents came to Ramsay and settled on the farm occupied by his brother, the late James Metcalfe. Upon attaining manhood he in 1845 married Jane McLean, youngest daughter of the late Lachlan McLean, and a year after his marriage he settled on the farm on the eighth line of Ramsay where he resided continuously up to the time of his death. His widow survives him, likewise his entire family of twelve, nine sons and three daughters. The sons are Messrs James, Robert and Henry and Dr. A.A. of Almonte; Hugh and William of Cando, Dakota; Lachlan, of Kendrick, Idaho; John on the homestead and Alexander, of Ramsay, Mrs Jas Nicholson, of Bowesmont, Dakota; Mrs Henry Eccles, of Steele, Dakota and Mrs Jas. Watt, of Lanark township, are his daughters. The funeral takes place this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock.

    Hugh married Jane McLean in 1845.     Link With Early Settlers Is Gone
    Mrs Hugh Metcalfe,
    Born Almost a Century Ago in Ramsay Township.
    One of the few remaining link with the early days of settlement in Ramsay was broken last week by the death of Mrs Hugh Metcalfe, at the age of almost ninety-seven. The funeral took place to the Presbyterian cemetery on Thursday, and was very largely attended. The late Mrs Metcalfe's maiden name was Jean McLean. She was the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Lachlan McLean, who settled in Ramsay in October of 1821, having come from the Mull of Cantire in Scotland. They travelled by way of the St. Lawrence to Prescott, across the country to the Rideau river,,and leaving it at Oliver's Ferry, came through Perth to Lanark village. At Lanark their daughter Jean a girl of ten years of age, died and hers was only the second interment in Lanark cemetery. Later on the same summer, Mr and Mrs McLean journeyed on, and settled on Lot No 18 on the 7th con of Ramsay. Two years later Mrs Hugh Metcalfe was born, and her parents named her Jean. Lachlan McLean was a veteran of the early days of the Napoleonic wars and saw service from 1779 to 1802 with the famous Cameron Highlanders. His discharge paper is dated 1802, and is now in the possession of his grandson, Lachlan McLean, of Beckwith. The late Lachlan McLean with his wife spoke Gaelic. He became very well known as the Ramsay Bard and had a distinct poetic talent. With the McLeans when they arrived in this district where the Blacks, Moores and Pauls, and a host of Scotch settlers, some of whom travelled on the same ship across the Atlantic. The late Mrs Metcalfe was the mother of a large family. They were: Christina, who is now Mrs Nicholson, of Bowesmont, Dakota; James, deceased; Lachlan, of Athabasca; Robert of Pakenham; Annie Mrs Eccles, of Medicine Hat; Alexander, of Ramsay; Hugh, of Comba, Dak; Jean, Mrs Jas Watt, of Lanark; Henry, deceased; William, of Dunseath, Dak.; John, on the homestead, and Dr. A.A. Metcalfe, of Almonte. The funeral took place from the residence of her daughter-in-law, Mrs Henry Metcalfe, of Almonte, the services being conducted by Rev. S. Gorley Brown.
