    - Andrew Paul 1859-1930
    - his wife, Christena McLean 1865-1947
    ---------------------------------------
Obituary - The Perth Courier - July 11,1930-
Paul - In the passing of Mr. Andrew Paul, on the 22nd of June, Dalhousie lost a life-long citizen and the people of McDonald's Corners and Elphin a good neighbor and friend. Before many of his friends realized that he was sick, Mr. Paul had become so ill that it was thought best that he should be taken to hospital. On June 18th he was taken to the Kingston Hospital where an operation was performed without delay. At first, hope was cherished as to his recovery but on Saturday afternoon, June 21st, it was seen that his condition was becoming more critical and on Sunday morning at eleven o'clock the end came. His wife and son, who had accompanied him to the hospital, remained with him until he passed away. He was conscious to the last and expressed himself as being ready to go.

Mr. Paul was born in Dalhousie near where he was living at the time of his death and on October of this year he would have been seventy-two years of age. For all he had reached his three score and ten, he did not seem old but went about his duties as a man of fewer years, and had such a cheerful spirit that one would not be reminded of his age. On December 14th 1881, he was married to Christina McLean and for nearly fifty years these two lived together in happy wedlock. Two sons were born to them - Robert who is at home, and John, a successful banker who lives in Rouleau, Sask. The latter reached home in time for the funeral which was held on the 25th at the home. The interment took place at Crawford's Cemetery. A large number of friends and acquaintances gathered to pay their tribute of respect. The services were conducted by the minister, Rev. K. McCaskill. The following acted as pallbearers : Walter Geddes, James Smith, James Paul, Robert Millar, Finlay McLean, and James G. McLean.

The following sent flowers : Wreaths from the family and from the Women's Institute of McDonald's Corners; sprays from Mr. and Mrs. Finlay McLean, Hillyard and Hugh McLean; Mr. and Mrs. J. G. McLean and Marion, Women's Institute of Elphin, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Bland Shaw, Mrs. Mary Park, Rev. and Mrs. E. McCaskill, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Millar, Edna and Marjorie, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Geddes, William and Howard Fair. Mr. Paul was respected and loved, a man always ready to do a kindness, honest, industrious, a dispenser of hospitality and a faithful attendant and supporter of his church. He was a good husband, a kind father, and a helpful neighbor. He will be greatly missed in the home, in the church, and in the community. He is survived by one brother, George Paul of Snow Road, and three sisters, Mrs. John Kring and Mary Paul of this community and Mrs. Isaac Shanks of Playfairville. How eminently true it is regarding this dear friend that he is gone but not forgotten. In the garden of memory, there will long remain a cherished spot for Andrew Paul.

Andrew married Christena McLean on 14 Dec 1881 in Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Christena (daughter of James McLean and Catharine "Kate" Gunn) was born on 22 Mar 1865 in Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 23 May 1947; was buried in Crawford Cemetery, Elphin, Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. ?/b?Ashby-Thompson - A most interesting event took place on Wednesday afternoon Dec 30?sup?th?/sup? at the home of Mrs. John R Thompson, Drummond, when her youngest daughter, Bessie Joan was united in the holy bonds of matrimony with Mr. James Ashby of Playfair, son of the late William Ashby of Fallbrook. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. A.H. Scott, Perth. The bride, who was given away by her brother, was very prettily attired in cream serge rimmed with shadow lace and swans down. At the conclusion of the ceremony and after congratulations, the guests sat down to a sumptuous repast. In the evening, the bridal party drove to the groom's home at Playfair where a reception was held, and a most enjoyable time was spent by all. The many gifts received testify to the esteem of bride and groom. All join in wishing Mr. and Mrs. Ashby a long and happy married life.

    Land & Property:
The Ashby home, now in 1969, belongs to Morris, son of John Ashby - Lot 22 of the 10th and 11th concessions. To the left hand side, high up from Bolton Creek, runs the old 11th concession known as the MacKay line, because of two brothers by that name who owned a double section of land. It still goes by that name.

(There was) A log boarding house, once owned and assumed to be built by Sandy Bain, who owned a mill by the Bolton Creek, operated by Jack Bolton. The first mill to be built in what was originally called Bolton's Mills, then changed to Fallbrook. It has been assumed this log building was used as a store as well as a boarding house, as there were shelves and partitions built in, similar to stores in those days when William Asby and his wife Charlotte Morris, moved there. Prior to that Bill Gallagher had lived there.

William Ashby had lived in the McDonald house (now in 1969 belongs to Roy Beach) then in Drummond, from there to what was known for years as the Murray House, but had at that time (the Murray's time) been down on the banks of the Fall river near John Blair's.

William Ashby bought the Gallagher property and house from Bill, consisted of 130 or 140 acres.
The family were Jim Ashby 1887, John Ashby 1899, Bill Ashby, Lizzie 1891, Lottie, Esther.

William Ashby died in 1913. His son John lived with his mother and worked the farm.
    Jim Ashby married Bessie Thompson.
    Lizzie married Herb Gallagher.
    Mae married John Watt.
    Lottie married Herb Watt.

In 1927 John Ashby with Mick Flood as carpenter built a large house directly behind the old one.
In 1928 Mrs William Ashby died.
In 1932 John Ashby marrried Lillian North, daugher of Mr and Mrs Thomas North from the 11th line, Bathurst, previously from Bennett's Lake.
They had 2 sons, Morris 1932 and Ivan 1939; one daughter and one son died in infancy.
Morris married Shirley Burke in 1959.
    Ivan married Phyllis Foster.

In 1965 John Ashby died, Lillian moved to Perth, Morris and family moved from the Watt farm at Playfairville, which he had bought, to the home farm and lives there with his wife and one son and two daughters.
Besides farming, Morris has worked for ---- years with the County.

    Mr. William Ashby
A life-long resident of Bathurst, in the vicinity of Fallbrook, was Mr. Wm. Ashby. Death summoned him away last Thursday, March 13th, after an illness with pneumonia.

For two years past heart trouble had given him much annoyance, and it was thought by his friends who were closest to him that this affection of the heart would be the cause of death. But, strange to say, it proved altogether otherwise, for the attack of pneumonia developed strongly and quickly proved fatal.

Wm. Ashby was born in Bathurst 51 years ago. His occupation waa farming, which he followed with much success. Twenty-eight years ago he married Charlotte Morris. There are six children, all at home - James, William, John, May, Elisabeth and Lottie. Anglican in religious matters and Conservative in politics Mr. Ashby led a consistent and honorable life, true to his church and party. The funeral last Saturday from Fallbrook to Playfair cemetery was largely attended, Rev. T. L. Aborn conducting the services.
