    • Census: 1861, Bruce Twp, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada; Canada

    Notes:

The history, relayed to two grand daughters (married to unrelated McLeans in Bruce County) is that Neil Munro was married and settled in Scotland at the time his father, Peter Munro and the rest of the family came to Canada in 1820. Neil was a cobbler (or boot maker) by trade, in the old country, and came to Canada thirty six years after his father left Scotland which would be two years after his father died.
The reason advanced for Neil Munro coming to Canada in 1856 was the fact that the bank in which he had deposited his savings met with financial difficulties with the result he lost approximately ?1000.

    ?i?From Findagrave:?/i?
According to the 1861 census (Canadian) Neil & family were living on lot 12 concession 3 in a one story cabin with their four sons. They emmigrated from Lockfineside,Argylshire, Scotland around 1855 and came to Southwold, Elgin County for two years. They then moved to Bruce township in Bruce county Ontario where the family has remained for 130 years.

Excerpts from John McCallum's research (2007): John Munro and Ann (McCallum) Munro, and thier family resided in Lochfineside in the parish of Glassary, near the village of Inverae, (today renamed Minard). They were probably crofters, living along the shores of Loch Fyne, who augmented thier living by herring fishing in the loch. Glassary ( later Kilmichael-Glassary) lies in the area between the Cound of Jura and Loch Fyne and Glenary, on the south by Loch Fyne and South Knapsdale, on the west by knapsdale and the village of Kilmartin, and on the north by Loch fyne and Davalich. (Information from Doug Wrightson, as provided by Doreen Guerriero) It is probable that John Munro - MUCXXX901, and Duncan Munro - MUBXXX901, were brothers. Both married one year apart, and were both listed as being from "Criggans", which is believed to be Creggins, locatated just north of Strachur, on the east bank of Loch Fyne.
