There died in Motherwell on the evening of Monday October 12, MR. WILLIAM BROWN in his 75th year. Deceased was born in Dalhousie, Lanark County. When he was about 5 years of age his parents came to Western Ot. And ___from the Canada Co. Here in Motherwell on which farm deceased has lived for almost 70 years. His death was not unexpected. He had been in failing health for almost 2 years but he did not consider his illness serious until a few months ago.

Mr. Brown was one of the early pioneers of whom but a few remain who by their labors and sacrifice have given to us who follow a rich heritage We reap what they have so sparingly sown. Mr. Brown was never married, a man quiet and unasssuming, of splendid intelligence, thrift and industry, yet withal something of a recluse. He will long be remembered in the neighourhood where practically the whole life was spent and where he was familiarly and endearingly known to kinsmen and friends alike as "Uncle Bill."

His remains were laid to rest on Wed. in Avonbank Cemetery- six of his nephews acting as pallbearers.

James [William Wood] Brown was born at Nathanfoot, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1805. During his boyhood days he attended the parish school, obtaining a fair education. In 1820, with his father and other members of the family, he came to Canada, settling in Dalhousie. For several years he assisted on the farm, when he became a school teacher, receiving for his services the sum of 30 pounds per annum. As a part of his duties in that capacity he had to collect his own salary, which, in many instances, was more difficult than earning it. It will be born in mind that Canada previous to 1841 had no School Act. During 1846 he removed to Fullarton, and assisted at raising the first school house in that township, in section No. 1, and upon its completion became first teacher in the municipality In 1847 he was appointed collector of taxes by the old district council, retaining that position until its abolition by the Act of 1850. When Fullarton was organized he was chosen treasurer, discharging the duties of that office till 1860, when he retired. In 1868 he was appointed auditor, remaining in harness till his death. He was an old magistrate, an elder of the Presbyterian church in Fullarton and Dalhousie.

Mr. Brown was a good public speaker, and a life-long supporter of the Reform Party. His countenance indicated intelligence and refinement. He was a man of strong convictions, sincere and ardent in his conduct, his whole character typical of the good old pioneer. In 1827 he married Margaret Park, of Dalhousie, who was his constant companion through his long life. Her death was more than he could bear, and it was only a few months afterwards when he was laid by her side in the quiet resting place of the dead.

Motherwell, Died at Motherwell on Thursday noon, October 6, 1892, MR. JAMES BROWN SR. Aged 87 years, six months, 15 days.

The deceased was born in the parish Lesmahago, Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1805. While young he obtained a first class education, which he put to a practical use in later years. In 1822 he emigrated to Canada and settled in Dalhousie, Lanark County, Ontario. In 1828 he married MARGARET PARK, a native of Cambuslang Scotland, and who emigrated to this county with her parents in the same year as Mr. Brown. By the marriage eleven children were born to them, three of whom died young. Shortly after his marriage he accepted the position as teacher in what was then called St. Andrew's school. After some years owing to the increase of population, it was thought desirable to divide this school into two sections so a new school house was erected near his farm, to which school he succeeded as a teacher, occupying this position until the year 1846, when he removed with his family to the township of Fullarton, Perth County, his eldest son James having preceded him one year. In this year he was appointed to the office of collector and gathered in the neighbourhood 50 pounds, an immense sum in those days. Which he carried on foot to Goderich, deposited with the district treasurer.

In 1847 the 1st school was erected and was first occupied by Mr. Brown who was thus the first school teacher in Fullarton, which position he retained until about the year 1860 when he resigned after 27 years of faithful service in the teaching profession, when he placed upon the superannuated list from which he drew an annuity of nearly $200. He filled the position of clerk of this municipality and first postmaster of Motherwell and for a number of years was auditor of the township accounts, also magistrate, all of which positions he discharged with that rectitude and ability which characterized him as a man.

In matter of religion he early identified himself with the Presbyterian Church. He was made an elder of St. Andrew's Church, Dalhousie, and after his removal to Fullarton he was appointed to the eldership of the church here, which office he held for over 30 years.

Last February bodily affliction set its hand upon him and in 8 months he passed away with a full assurance of the Christian faith.

When faith is strong and conscience clear
And word of peace the spirit cheer
    And visioned glories half appear;
Tis joy 'tis triumh then to die

His earthly remains were followed on Sat. last, to Avonbank Cemetery, by many mourning relatives and sympathizing friends just as they followed his partner in life but 6 months ago. The family thus doubly bereaved have the sympathy of all who know them.

James married Margaret Park on 29 Feb 1828 in Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Margaret (daughter of James Park, I and Marrion Allen) was born on 10 Jul 1807 in West Cotes, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland; was christened on 19 Jul 1807 in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 14 Apr 1892 in Perth County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in Avonbank Presbyterian Cemetery, Avonbank, Perth County, Ontario, Canada. OBITUARY

MRS. JAMES BROWN nee MARGARET PARK

Motherwell - died on Thursday night April 14, 1892, Mrs. James Brown aged 84 yrs., 9 months and 4 days. The deceased whose maiden name was Margaret Park was born in Cambuslang, Scotland in the year 1807. She emigrated with her parents in the year 1822 to the Township Dalhousie, Lanark County, where 6 years later she married James Brown, who is also a native of Scotland, who survives her. Ten children were born to them, two of whom died young. In 1846 they moved to Township of Fullarton. Here they made themselves a home in what was then the forests of Canada and here they have since lived together until her death.

A short time ago, although apparently in good health, blood poisoning set in a small scratch on the back of her hand, and after 3 weeks of terrible suffering she passed away. Six of her children were present at her bedside and saw an affectionate wife and kind and loving mother, after 64 years of married life, breathe her last having enjoyed a much longer period of wedded life than usually falls to the human race.

She, in early life, became a member of the Presbyterian Church and led a long, devoted, exemplary Christian life. Her whole life was spent in trying to do good to others, caring little for her own personal benefit as long as the comfort and happiness of others could be secured. She died in the full assurance where there shall be no more pain, no more parting, but where she shall ever sing the praises of her Redeemer.

The funeral was well attended by many from a distance who had met to pay the last sad tribute of respect to all that remained of one whom they had learned to love and esteem. Six of her grandsons acted as pallbearers while the Rev. Mr. Grant, St. Mary's, conducted the funeral services. She has left behind many deceased ______ grandchildren to mourn her loss. (Poem). St Mary's Journal. Microfilm N 198, Reel 11.

Plympton Twp, Lambton County, Ontario, Canada

Marion's parents may have been Hugh Allen and Mary Park. She married James Park on Aug. 8, 1788 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland. James was born Feb. 9, 1766 and worked as a coallier in Scotland; he was the son of James Park and Martha Connell who were married July 17, 1768. James is thought to have died in Plympton Twp., Lambton Co., Ontario.

UPDATED INFO - October 2013 - Marion is probably not buried at Umpherston Cemetery. She probably relocated to Plympton Twp., Lambton Co., and is buried there, location unknown. This information is based on L. Hanson's work in finding Hugh Park's will.

Marion and James had 13 children. All of their children, born in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland, came to Canada, except for their son Andrew, who stayed in Scotland. Marion and James lived in the West Cotes area of Cambuslang.

The children of James and Marion were:

James Jr. b. Jun. 8, 1789; m. Euphemia Sutherland; d. probably in Plympton Twp., Lambton Co, Ontario. Euphemia may have been the daughter of William Sutherland and Katherine McPherson. Their son Allen's line appears to have moved down to Michigan.

Mary b. Oct. 15, 1792; m. William Arbuckle/Arbucle. It is thought that they came to Canada later than most of the family. The couple did not have any children. Eventually they returned to Scotland. Research by Michael Umperson provides the death registration for Mary and William.
