Services held for Mrs. Gwen Lawrence

A memorial service was held today (Monday) for Gwendolyn Marguerite Bowman Lawrence, wife of Robert Nigel Lawrence, who died at the family home at 5527 Addeson Ave. on Friday. She was 64 and had been in ill health for some time. The mother of three sons, she had taught physical education in two Western provinces before her marriage. The service was held at St. Lukes Anglican Church at 2 p.m. with three officers of the church in attendance: The Rev. Canon Randall E. Ivany of Edmonton, formerly of Red Deer and now Alberta Ombudsman; Venerable Archdeacon Cecil Swanson of Calgary, who married Nigel and Gwen Lawrence in 1933; and Venerable Archdeacon Murray Starr of St. Lukes.

Mrs, Lawrence was a member of the Red Deer Commission of the Girl Guides of Canada, a member of the Red Deer Hospital Auxiliary and of St. Lukes Altar Guild. Born in Lethbridge on Feb. 4, 1909, she attended Susy Bawden Private School, Lethbridge Central School and Lethbridge High School. Adept at track and field, gymnastics and dancing, she had registered in 1927 at the Margaret Eaton School of Physical Education in Toronto for two years study. After travelling in Europe, she opened a small studio to teach dancing and gymnastics in Lethbridge in 1929. At the age of 21, in September of 1930, she accepted a position as gym mistress at St. Hilda's School for Girls in Calgary. Two years later, she transferred to Riverbend School for Girls (now Balmoral Hall) in Winnipeg, remaining there for a year; marrying Robert Nigel Lawrence in Lethbridge on July 19, 1933.

GWEN LAWRENCE led Guides here The couple lived four years in Calgary, where Mr, Lawrence was with the Bank of Montreal and an investment firm. Upon his joining North Star Oil, they moved to Winnipeg in 1937. The family came to Red Deer in 1950, where Mr. Lawrence had the Cockshutt dealership with his brother, Cal. Besides her husband, Mrs. Lawrence is survived by sons N. Patrick Lawrence and Timothy C. Lawrence of Red Deer and Michael B. Lawrence of Como, Que. A brother, R. F, P, Bowman, lives in Lethbridge. A sister, Catherine May, died on Feb. 2, 1924, being buried on Gwens 15th birthday. There are seven grandchildren, including Gillian Mary. Jennifer Elizabeth and Pamela Anne, daughters of Patrick; Fraser Bowman, Christopher David and Tasha Kirby, children of Michael; and Jocelyn Elizabeth, daughter of Timothy. Eventide Funeral Chapels in charge of arrangements. Cremation preceded todays service at St. Luke's.

?b?The Bowman Arts Centre?/b? In 1911, the decision was taken by Alberta's Department of Education to build a manual training school in Lethbridge. It was to serve as a regional centre for the teaching of domestic science and manual arts. At the time there were two other schools in the province offering these courses, the Calgary Normal School and the Camrose Normal School, but Lethbridge was the first school to be built specifically for these purposes. In 1913, the Edmonton Technical School was built to serve the northern portion of the province.

In 1915, as a result of the economic impact of World War I, the school's funds and teaching staff were greatly strained. Vocational classes were ended, and after appropriate renovations, the building reopened as the Lethbridge High School, a function which it served until 1928. In 1929 it was reduced to an elementary school and renamed in honour of Charles B. Bowman, a prominent Lethbridge businessman. Bowman had worked as a clerk for the H. Bently Company and in 1891, began the C.B. Bowman Insurance Agency. He was also extensively involved in civic affairs, serving as an alderman, a director of the Board of Trade and as a school board member. The school continued to occupy the building until 1963, when it was purchased by the City of Lethbridge.

The Allied Arts Council moved into the building after the purchase, when the City of Lethbridge spent $12,000 on minimal improvements. It became known as the Bowman Arts Centre. In 1980, Bailey Consultants published, Encore: Recycling Public Buildings for the Arts.

Can the building be saved?

When someone states that a historic building has too much damage to be saved, it is sometimes a good thing to think about the Acadia Block.

In March 1918, the Acadia Block suffered the worst fire in Lethbridge history to that date.

"Lethbridge last night experienced the most disastrous fire in its history when the Acadia block owned by C.B. Bowman and L.M. Johnstone was completely gutted with a loss of approximately $104,350, well covered by insurance?

The fire was the most spectacular ever seen in Lethbridge. Coming as it did in the evening, and with the flames pouring through the roof, it presented a spectacle of destruction such as has seldom been witnessed and it was the magnet which drew over 2500 people from all corners of the city." (20 March 1918 Lethbridge Herald)

As can be seen from the pictures, the building was in shambles following the fire.

But the owners chose to salvage and rebuild the building.

In August 2009 the reconstructed building was designated as a Municipal Historic Resource for the City of Lethbridge.

Today the Acadia Block, at 614-616 3 Avenue South, is the home of Dove Christian Supplies

In 1891 he started a real estate and insurance office which, with the exception of the Alberta Railway and Irrigation Company, was the first real estate business in Lethbridge. His first office was locatee on Round Street, now Fifth Street South.

Through his real estate business played a major role in the development of the community. He once had wide realty interests in Lethbridge and did not completely dispose of these and his real estate business until some years after leaving the city.

In 1909 Mr. Bowman, in conjunction with L.M. Johnstone, K.C., now retired on Vancouver Island, built the Acadia Building on Third Avenue South and moved his real estate business into offices there.

Among the buildings he once owned in the city were those on Sixth Street South which now house the Sykes-Imperial Furniture Store, Jenkins' Groceteria and Fraches's Flower Shop. Mr. Bowman was closely associated with Fred W. Downer of this city during his long business activity in Lethbridge.

In recognition of his contribution to civic affairs and the development of Lethbridge schools, Bowman School was named after him. He was known as the dean of insurance agents in Alberta.

After Mr. Bowman retired from Lethbridge and disposed of his interests in the business, the business became the present Bowman Wallace Co. Ltd.

Community Work:
"He was for many years the secretary-treasurer of the Lethbridge school board, served for ten years as secretary of the Lethbridge Board of Trade, and in various positions with other organizations. Among these were: Secretary of the Lethbridge Agricultural Society from 1896 to 1901 and president of the society in 1902, secretary of Galt Hospital for a number of years after 1903, and a member of the local board of control of the Dry Farming Congress here in 1912.

Fraternally Mr. Bowman was a member of North Star Lodge No. 4, A.F. anad A.M., and Shekinah Chapter, R.A.M. He and his family identified with the Church of England. He was one of the founders of St Augustin's, and also assisted in establishing St. May's in North Lethbridge. While a Conservative in politics, he was generally classed as an independent Conservative.

"Mr. Bowman was most active in municipal affairs, serving during those years as secretary-treasurer for the town, and then the city when Lethbridge advanced in its standing, and as the city assessors. During that time his real estate office was located in the city hall. He resigned his civic posts in 1907 to devote his entire time to the real estate business, which had grown to large proportion.

From 1907 onwards for several years with the exception of 1906, Mr. Bowman was an alderman. He also held the position of acting mayor at one time in 1909, but was unsuccessful at the polls when he one sought election as the city's mayor."
