    Brownlee? Died, at the residence of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jas. Brownlee, Elphin, Sunday, 5th March, Mary Stoaks, relict of the late John Brownlee, aged 80.
    Elphin? Another landmark has gone in the person of Mrs. Jno. Brownlee, who passed quietly away last Sunday morning. She had been confined to bed for about six months with paralysis. The deceased emigrated with her parents from Scotland in 1821 and has been a resident of N. Sherbrooke ever since. She was interred in Crawford's burying ground on Tuesday.

    James Brownlie was born abt 1765 in Cambusnethan, Lanark Scotland. He was a blacksmith and lived on Hungryhill farm in Scotland. Google map coordinates for Hungryhill farm in Scotland are: 55.80073, -3.84706.
    On 15 Dec 1789, James married Margaret Thomson and they had nine children all born in Scotland. In 1821 son David immigrated to Canada and settled on Lot 9 Con 12 Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario.
    In 1826 James came to Canada from Scotland to Kingston, Ontario with wife Margaret Thomson, sons Robert and John, daughter Janet (Jennie) and granddaughter Margaret Paterson. Some other members of the family remained in Scotland. The Brownlie family remained in Kingston, Ontario until 1828 when the family moved to Lot 8 Con 10 of Dalhousie Twp. James died in Dalhousie Twp in 1840 and was buried in a grove of hemlock trees in the east end of a field by the house on his son Robert's farm on Lot 10 Con 12 of Dalhousie Twp. In the late 1950s Lanark County decided to rebuild the county road between Lanark and Elphin. Unfortunately the new road was rerouted over James Brownlie's grave site. Now James' grave in under Lanark County Road #12, just west of concession road #12.

    James married Margaret Thomson. Margaret was born on 5 Oct 1766 in Glassford, Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 17 Sep 1855 in Dalziel Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland; was buried in Dalziel Old Manse Road Burial Ground, Dalzeil, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Daughter of Robert Thomson and Marion Smith, married James Brownlie on 15 Dec 1789. James and Margaret had 9 children.
    Margaret and James came to Canada from Scotland in 1826 to Kingston Ontario, with sons, Robert and John, daughter, Janet (Jennie) and granddaughter Margaret Paterson.
    In 1828 the Brownlie family moved to Lot 8 Con 10, Dalhousie Twp., Lanark County, Ontario.
    Son David was already living on Lot 10 Con 12, Dalhousie Twp, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. David had arrived in Canada on the ship Commerce in 1821.
    After her husband James died in 1840, Margaret returned to Scotland in 1841.
    Margaret does not appear in the 1841 UK Census taken on 6th June 1841. She must have arrived back in Scotland after the beginning of June 1841.

    Name: Margaret Brownlie, Age 87, is living with her son-inlaw Robert and Marion Lindsay and grandson James.

    After Margaret returned to Scotland in 1841, she lived in Dalziel for 14 years before her death at age 90 in 1855.
