    F.G. Campbell received word of the death of his grandfather Duncan Campbell of Montreal at the residence of his son-in-law Thomas Gilday. The funeral will take place to Oliver's Ferry on the arrival of the 1:00 train from Montreal on Saturday. He was an old resident.

    Obituary - The Perth Courier - May 13, 1898
    The body of the late Duncan Campbell of Oliver's Ferry, was brought from Montreal and interred on Saturday afternoon in the Oliver's Ferry Cemetery. Deceased was born in Monlin, Glen Lyon, Perthshire, Scotland and was brought to this country by his friends when an infant. He was married to a daughter of the late Rev. George Buchanan, Presbyterian minister of Beckwith who survives him. Among his surviving children are Mrs. Hoops of Toronto and Mrs. Gilday of Montreal. He was a grandfather of Mr. F. G. Campbell of this town. He was a Presbyterian in religion and in politics a Liberal. About 1876/1878 he was appointed by the Mackenzie government care taker of the Ferry Bridge, then first built, and he kept the position until advancing years forced his retirement.

    Another pioneer settler of North Elmsley died on Friday of last week, in the stead of Mr. George McKay, and the illness that caused his death was only of two weeks duration.

    Mr McKay was born on the Scotch Line in 1818, the son of a Black Watch soldier who had emigrated to this county about 1815 and took up land on what is now known as the McKinley farm. Deceased took to farming and on his father's death took over the management of the farm which he conducted for nigh three score years and ten.

    He took to wife Elizabeth Gallagher, who with three sons and three daughters survive; John, on the homestead; Albert, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Henry, in Dakota; Mrs. Wm. Watt, Otty Lake; Mrs James Wilson, Rideau Ferry; and Mrs Gordon McDonald, in Alberta.

    Mr McKay was a successful farmer, and a man of high repute in his community. The funeral took place on Sunday last to Oliver's Ferry cemetery and was attended by the whole countryside.

His sufferings previous to his death which were long and painful, he bore with great patience and christian resignation to the will of his heavenly Father. By his death the church has lost an eminent Presbyterian Minister - his wife, an affectionate husband - and his family, an indulgent parent.
