    Notes:

Report from the lifesaving crew: 1915 --- Report by Hector Mcleod, coxswain, involving the life station crew and drowning of Capt. John Munro: "On Thursday evening one of the fishing tugs picked up the boat (a small sail boat) belonging to Capt. Munroe off Southampton. He had gone out trolling and apparently fell out of the boat and was drowned. He was seen in the boat about 15 or 20 minutes before his boat was picked up. But, no one saw him fall out of the boat. He was an old Lake captain of 73 years of age. As soon as word was received that the tug picked up his boat, we took out the lifeboat and grappled for the body from 6:30 to 10:30 at night and we also went out with the lifeboat on Friday, Saturday and all day Sunday. But we did not locate the body. The family of Capt. Munro also had expert grapplers here from Toronto. But they were also unsuccessful. The Lake bottom is very rough here and it takes it almost impossible to grapple for a body. However, the body will likely rise in a few days and we will be on the watch for it. Kindly advise us if we will send in those trips as practice trips (or otherwise) in our report. Our rules do not say what we are to do in case of accidental drowning" The department later said it had no objection, if some of the friends of Capt. Munro want to use the lifeboat to continue looking for the body.

From Bruce Tales & Trails: Bruce Township Tales and Trails, page 302 John Munro....His family were Margaret (Maggie), James, Mary, Grace, Angus, Jennie, and Isabelle (Belle). Maggie married Angus McLeod, a fisherman at Southampton. James skipped as a deck hand on the AZOV and was drowned in Lake Huron, May 26, 1898. Mary married William Levis and lived in Toronto. Grace married Reginald Saunders and lived in Toronto. Angus was first mate on the Schooner AZOV. He became Captain Angus Munro, married Letitia (Letta) Walker of Tiverton, and in 1902 became a citizen of U. S. A. and changed the spelling of his name to Munroe. Jenny died in her twenties. Isabelle (Belle) became a school teacher in S. S. No. 5 Burce. She married Donald McLeod of Southampton, a commercial fisherman.

The Times Article: From The Times; Southampton, ON July 28, 1915 Captain John Munro at one time owned the famous AZOV, a two-masted schooner. It was 106 feet long. 23-7 feet in beam and was of 195 gross tons. She was said to be the last schooner to be lost along the Saugeen Coast. It is also said she survived the "Great Storm of 1880". Captain Munro and his wife Elizabeth Buchanan retired in 1913 to a cozy little house at 90 Albert St. in Southampton. Ont. Captain Munro is said to have missed the water so much that he bought a small sailboat and went fishing in it almost every day. On July 15, 1915 he drowned whils fishing from the little sailboat. Dynamite was used in an attempt to bring his body up. On Tues. after dynamiting the lake with hundreds of sticks of dynamite near where Capt. Munro was drowned at Southampton, the body was finally recovered.

    • Census: 1861, Bruce Twp, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada; Canada

    Notes:

The history, relayed to two grand daughters (married to unrelated McLeans in Bruce County) is that Neil Munro was married and settled in Scotland at the time his father, Peter Munro and the rest of the family came to Canada in 1820. Neil was a cobbler (or boot maker) by trade, in the old country, and came to Canada thirty six years after his father left Scotland which would be two years after his father died.
The reason advanced for Neil Munro coming to Canada in 1856 was the fact that the bank in which he had deposited his savings met with financial difficulties with the result he lost approximately ?1000.

    ?i?From Findagrave:?/i?
According to the 1861 census (Canadian) Neil & family were living on lot 12 concession 3 in a one story cabin with their four sons. They emmigrated from Lockfineside,Argylshire, Scotland around 1855 and came to Southwold, Elgin County for two years. They then moved to Bruce township in Bruce county Ontario where the family has remained for 130 years.

Excerpts from John McCallum's research (2007): John Munro and Ann (McCallum) Munro, and thier family resided in Lochfineside in the parish of Glassary, near the village of Inverae, (today renamed Minard). They were probably crofters, living along the shores of Loch Fyne, who augmented thier living by herring fishing in the loch. Glassary ( later Kilmichael-Glassary) lies in the area between the Cound of Jura and Loch Fyne and Glenary, on the south by Loch Fyne and South Knapsdale, on the west by knapsdale and the village of Kilmartin, and on the north by Loch fyne and Davalich. (Information from Doug Wrightson, as provided by Doreen Guerriero) It is probable that John Munro - MUCXXX901, and Duncan Munro - MUBXXX901, were brothers. Both married one year apart, and were both listed as being from "Criggans", which is believed to be Creggins, locatated just north of Strachur, on the east bank of Loch Fyne.
