(Research):E Miller & D. Miller Duncan notes: Con 1 Lot 18, the Dodds family farm, settled in 1831.?u?

Glen Tay Then and Now - After the Great Fire
?/u?John Hargraves rebuilt the factories, but because of tremendous losses, he never got out of debt. He eventually sold everything to Henry Moorehouse in 1872. Moorehouse went into business with Ralph Dodds,....who owned 450 (250?) acres near the mills, was married to Louise McKay, and had moved to Adamsville in 1831(?), conducted the woollen industries until 1897. He employed two managers for his part of the business, James Kendry in 1872 and C.L. Owen in 1879. This factory employed 50 men and manufactured up to 100,000 yards of tweed each year.

Moorehouse who owned the power plant, sold it to the Perth Electric and Water Power Company to aid in producing electricity for the Town of Perth. The last of the Moorehouse and Dodds machinery was sold from Glen Tay to St John's, QC, in 1899.

Perth Public Utilities used this electrical power until later, in 1918, when it came from High Falls, MacDonalds Corners, ON, Canada.

In the spring of 1926, without maintenance, and the timbers rotted, the dam itself finally let go. The last remaining source of power, of this once industrial mill, taking with it the bridge and overspilling its banks, flooding everything in its path, as far down as the low lying areas in Perth. Wooden planks were laid across, to the little island, south of the old bridge, and from the island to the north shore, where families could cross the river on foot, until a new bridge could be built. Ernest Miller as a young man was warned never to cross this alone, as it did not have any safety railing. The only way Herbert Miller and family could cross the river, was by hooking up the horses to the surrey and go across below the bridge where the river was shallow, in order to attend church.

Ralph Dodds and his brother Alex purchased part of Lot 20 Con 2 from Henry Moorehouse in 1858. In approximately 1858-59 Ralph built the home, which was later obtained by his daughter Elizabeth (Eliza Jane) Dodds, married to Robert Miller. This home has been in the Miller name to the present day, known as 'Tayside Farms'.

    Birth:
Often recorded as England although recorded as Scotland on his death certificate. His mother was from England and his father from Scotland and it is possible that his mother may have returned to her ancestral home for births. It is said that the Dodds land had a corner where you could have one foot in both countries. Census records indicate England and being closer to the time of his birth and probably recorded by Ralph himself, may be more accurate. However, the Dodds family emigrated from Scotland and lived in Coldstream, Berwickshire before immigration.

    Christened:
In the 1901 census this date is given as his birth date.

Louisa's birth place is reported as the USA (1861, 1871, 1891), Canada (1851), and Scotland (1901) in various census returns. It appears that her father was a military settler so any are possible but it was most likely Canada or the USA.

    ?i?Bill McCullough notes
?/i?William Cowie on the Scotch Line was her great grandfather.
Janet and Robert Cowie came to Perth in the 1830's via the USA.
Robert Cowie was married to Henrietta Adams. Henrietta's brother John Adams farmed and taught music. John Adams and his wife (?) adopted his wife's niece, Louise McKay who later married Ralph Dodds. Their granddaughter, a Mrs. Ferrier lives across the road from the John Adams farm.

    Died:
Dodds, at Glen Tay, on Thursday October 11, 1906, Louisa McKay, wife of Mr. Ralph Dodds, aged 72 years.

    The Perth Courier
    Perth, Ontario, Canada
    October 19, 1906, pg. 5

Dodds - In the sudden death of Mrs. Ralph Dodds, of Glen Tay, on Thursday morning last that community and township is bereft of a whole hearted woman. Mrs. Dodds was in her usual health and on Thursday morning was going about as usual until about 10 o'clock when she fell in a faint. Members of the family went to her aid immediately but could do nothing and she passed away a few moments later. Heart trouble won the cause.

Deceased was born in Rochester 72 years ago, daughter of James McKay. When three years of age she came to live with her uncle the late John W. Adams, on the Scotch Line, and his home was her home until her marriage with Mr. Ralph Dodds in 1851. Their marriage was a long and happy one and the bereaved and aged husband is tendered the sympathy of the community in the sudden loss he has been called upon to bear in the death of his sharer of joyts and sorrows for more than 55 years.

Eight children were born to the union: Alex., Davidson Man.; Mrs. Robert Miller, 3rd line of Bathurst; Mrs. Robert Miller, Rideau Ferry; John A., on the homestead; James (deceased), Mrs. R.M. Rudsdale, 3rd line Bathurst; Mrs. Lorenzo Miller, Crookston Minn.; Matthew, Smiths Falls.

The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon to Elmwood cemetery; service was conducted at the house and grave by Revs. D Currie and J.G. Greig. The pallbearers were relatives of the deceased. The funeral cortege was a long one and evidenced not only respect and esteem but sympathy for the family in their sudden loss.
