Mary Isabel Miller
The Christie Lake community was shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Mary Isabel Miller on Thursday evening, October 29, at her home on the Third Line of Bathurst, where she had lived her entire life.

Born on October 29, 1895, Mary Miller was the elder daughter of the late George Miller and his wife, Charlotte Jordan. She was a member of Calvin United Church were she acted in the capacity of organist for a number of years, as well as taking an active interest in Sunday School and U.C.Wl work. A sister, Edith, survives.

The funeral services, conducted by Mr. Roy Wiley, minister of Calvin United Church, were held on Saturday, October 31, from Blair's Funeral Chapel. Interment was in the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Arnold Miller, Alan Jordan, Eric Dixon, Gordon Stiller, Donald Jordan and R.A. Richardson.

George Miller would be seven years of age when his parents William Miller and Mary Burns left Dumbarton to emigrate to Lanark Cty.

He Married Helen Mason, the 3rd daughter of Robert Mason and Helen Gourlie on 6 April 1936 at Lanark and took his bride to live on C3 L9 Bathurst.

They had a total of twelve children, ten of which survived and were baptized at St. Andrew's Church, Perth.

George and Helen Miller are buried in the Craig St. Cemetery in Perth. Their unmarried daughters, Jane E. and Catherine H. are buried beside them.

In 1841 Census he is located Bathurst C3 L9W, arrived from Scotland in 1821, Presbyterian, 2 born Scotland, 3 children born in Canada.

Petition of George Millar of the Township of Bathurst eldest son and heir at law of William Millar late of the Township of Lanark in the Bathurst District
Humbly Shewith
That your Petitioners father was located as a Glasgow Society Settler in the year 1821 upon the West half of Lot No 15 in the 1st concession of Lanark in the Bathurst Districyt - That your Petitioner's father having died some years ago, your Petitioner is heir at law to his landed property - That it is only come to your Petitioner's knowledge within those few days that it is necessary for him to apply to the Commissioners appointed under the heir and Devisee Act before he can obbtain a Deed or Patent for his said lot - That it is now too late to do so for this next sitting of the Commissioners and as there a large improvements on the lot
- May it therefore please your Excellency to consider the premises and permit said half lot to remain in its present state until the meeting of the Commissioners in the year 1841 when your Petitioner shall apply as heir at law to his father and your Petitioner as is duty bound shall ever pray.

The Memorial of George Miller, of the township of Bathurst in the District of Bathurst, Respectfully Sheweth;
That your memorialist is the youngest son of the late William Miller who was the original nominee of the west half of Lot Number 15 in the First Con. of the Township of Lanark having been located theron in the year 1821, and resided on said lot from that ? until the time of his decease in the year 1825. As he died intestate, having merely expressd verbally a short time before his death his wish that the Lot referred to should become the property of your memorialist, your memoralist together with his mother and some others of the family continued to occupy the Lot for several years. But your memorialist ascertaining that he could have no legal title to the Lot, an elder brother being resident in Scotland where he still is, the lot was abandoned and has remained unoccupied for several years past and has remained unoccupied for several years past.
Your memorialist, however has recently ascertained that the Brother referred to, who is the legal claimant, wishes to emigrate to this Province, at an early period. He therfore prays, that the said lot may not .... until the meeting of the Commissioners in the year 1841 when your Petitioner shall apply as heir at law to his father and your Petitioner as in duty bound shall ever pray

This petitioner prays that the location of the West half of Lot number fifteen in the 1st concession of the township Lanark belonged to his late Father may not be rescinded but that opportunity be afforded to his brother, the heir at law to claim it.

This half lot referred to was returned by the Military Settling Department as a location in the name of William Millar, an Emigrant Settler, and has not been described for Patent - The report of Inspection of May 1840 states an improvement of fifteen acres as having been made but which at that time was unoccupied. An Order in Council of 3rd Dec 1840 is filed in this Office permitting the location to remain in order to bring Testament before the Heirs and Devisees Commission but no claim has upto the present time been inferred. A further period of four years ,might be allowed within which the parties interested should be required to prove his claim.

William V. Moore , Wisconsin Probate. A kerfuffle over his estate. ?b?Mary Miller?/b?, his wife, refused administration on his estate. ?b?Jane Ebbot?/b? petitioned for re-payment of loans totaling over $1000 - in 1885 - dating back to 1855. The notes were in her name then: ?b?Jane M. Wilson?/b?. She says that she is the sister of William's wife, Mary Miller. A great grandson petitioned in 1948 because his grandfather had been named in the will "Miller W. Moore" and his name was really "William M. Moore" There is diagram of the homestead there too.

I do not have the diagram. I think Robert Urquhart's 4 great grand daughter may as a guess.

Then, Mary Miller Moore died in 1898 and her parents were named as ?b?William Miller and Margaret Burns?/b?.

So, now we know that William Miller 1786 went to the United States in 1836, was in Racine in 1844, that he had, at least, children?b? Margaret Mary, Jane, and John ?/b?with him. Jane married one husband Joseph Wilson along the way, and Mary married William V. Moore either Dec. 25 1844 or Jan. 31st 1845 - both records exist. Unfortunately, nothing further about the whereabouts of William and Margaret after the 1850 census of Wisconsin. William Miller 1786 & Mary Margaret Burns your 4 great grandparents either died before 1860 or moved on.

Wm. Miller & Mary or Margaret Burns were married at Kilmarnock Scotland on 13 June 1807.
The baptismal records of their children in Scotland use one of those two christian names but never the two at one time. We have not checked her birth records to verify which is correct or whether it should be Mary Margaret Burns. It is rumoured that she is a sister of Robbie Burns the poet but never verified.
In 1821, William Miller took his family to Greenock where they embarked for Canada settling in Lanark twp on Con 1 Lot 15 opposite his brother Andrew who had drawn a similar lot in Dalhousie twp.
Burial records have never been located but the 1834 report on the condition of the 1820-21 Scottish settlers to Lanark and Dalhousie twps states that widow Miller is alone on L15 C1 Lanark and that the rest of the family has moved to Bathurst twp. In his diaries Robert Mason recorded that Mrs. William Miller died 13 Dec 1839. As three of his daughters were married to Miller husbands we have assumed that this was Mary Margaret Burns.
To make a positive identification more difficult there were no less than four William Millers in Dalhousie and Lanark twps in 1834. A William Miller left L14 C2 Dalhousie in 1839 and moved to Hammond, St. Lawrence Co., New York State. Efforts to identify this man have failed to date.
Janet, Margaret Ann & Mary, daughters of William and Mary Margaret Miller have not been identified in our research although earlier family history had indicated possible marriages to a Brownlee and a Robinson.

pg. 105 reflects the confusion of William Millers at the time. She has Andrew Miller as a son rather than a brother. Again on pg 106 there is confusion of generations.
One of the William Millers was a member of the ?b?Glasgow Canadian Society. ?/b?Signatures of James, Andrew and William are posted on page 103. Walter Black was head of this emigration society. This group arrived in 1821 on the ship George Canning.?b?

As part of the ?i?Glasgow Sr. Wrights was ?/i?Andrew Blair (4 people). As part of the ?i?Lanarkshire Society?/i? James Gilmour (6 persons), William Miller (1 person) and William Gilmour (1 person) sailed on Earl of Buckinghamshire, Johnston Master, departing Greenock on 29 Apr 1821 to sail to Quebec.
Among the 1821 arrivals is Robert Mason on Lanark C2 Lot 9W, Alexander Brownlee on Dalhousie C12 L11W, and John Miller on Lanark C2 L22W.?b?
?/b?on the same ship, Cannnington as part of the ?i?Cambuslang Society?/i?, there was a John Miller (4 people) and a William Gourley (5 people).

I find that one of the William Millers from Scotland, was a bachelor, and had arrived on the Commerce on June 1820 and was not located until 22 March 1821 on Lanark C7 L12W. Furthermore I discover that he was not sent out by Government but was received by authority of Commander, 22 January, 1821. A Hugh Miller, 1821 settled in Ramsay Township C10 L18 on 25 Jul 1821. He was of interest, not as a Miller but as an ancestor of Beatrice Miller Duncan who married into my husband's Duncan family.

Another document was In this report we find that William Miller, 1820,?b? ?/b?purchased?b? ?/b?Lanark C2 Lot 13W from Wm. Brown who now owns a tavern in Perth and that William Miller is located on Dalhousie C2 Lot 14E. It seems there is a 'Brown' connection yet to be discovered in the family. A grandson of William and Elizabeth has ?i?Brown?/i? as a second name on a marriage record. It is also noted that John Blair sold Dalhousie C5 L6W to William Miller. At this point I go back to the record of births and baptism I have already gathered. I know that William Miller and Elizabeth Gilmour, are the parents of Robert, b. 3 Nov 1784, William, b. 19 Sep 1786, John, born 7 Jun 1789, and Jean b. 3 Aug 1791, all in Dumbarton, Dumbartonshire, Scotland.

Second son may have been William, married to Jane. Appears in Mississippi Methodist circuit, son Thomas G. b 1832, bap. Rev. Anson Green, Carleton Place; Philander Smith G. This family not in the 1842 or 1851 Census for Beckwith but may have been in Ramsay (census missing). Gourlays from County Tyrone, Ireland in Carleton County

and a daughter under 12 years in 1821.
William appears to have gone to the USA circa 1824, probably to work on a canal but returned to Canada and went to Elizabethtown (Brockville). He died there circa 1830. Elizabeth Gourlie married John Sproule in 1834 and they had two children.

This family not in the 1842 or 1851 Census for Beckwith but may have been in Ramsay (census missing). Gourlays from County Tyrone, Ireland in Carleton County

and a daughter under 12 years in 1821.
William appears to have gone to the USA circa 1824, probably to work on a canal but returned to Canada and went to Elizabethtown (Brockville). He died there circa 1830. Elizabeth Gourlie married John Sproule in 1834 and they had two children.
