Obituary - Mr. William H. Blair

Following a long illness, patiently borne, Mr. William H. Blair, of Bathurst, near Fallbrook, yielded up this life on Wednesday evening, 20th July, at the age of 56 years. The cause of his death was lung trouble, begun by a cold brought on while working at the harvest a few years ago and which it was found impossible to check. Deceased was the son of Mr. John Blair of Bathurst, who survives his son, and was a nephew or Mr. James W. Blair, of Perth. He was married to Miss Margaret Miller, daughter of the late George Miller, 3rd con, Bathurst, who, with three sons and three daughters, survive him. Deceased was a Presbyterian, and a man greatly esteemed by his friends and acquaintances, who found in him a most friendly and obliging neighbour and estimable citizen. Besides farming, he was well known as a stock drover, and a large dealer in cattle and lambs, which brought him in contact with a large circle of fellow farmers.

    Blair
The late John Blair who died at his home at Brooke on the 4th inst., and whose remains were interred in White's Cemetery, was truly a pioneer settler of Bathurst. He came to this county from Glasgow, Scotland, where he was born in 1820, with his parent Wm. Blair and family, beeing then a mere babe in arms. The family settled for a time in the primeval forest in South Sherbrooke near the Bathurst line, but shortly afterwards homesteaded in Bathurst.

William Blair was one of the earliest settlers of theh Brooke section of the Brooke section of Bathurst, and a founder of the Blair family in that township. The old homestead remained in the family for long generations and passed to his son James W. who farmed it till he sold out and moved to town a few years ago.

The late John Blair was married to Margaret Truelove when both were in the heyday of youth, and they struck bravely into the virgin forest, locating their home on the sixth line, in the rear of a farm on the fifth concession.

The union was blessed with a large family, and those surviving today are Neil, John, James and Hugh, and Robert of Sharbot Lake; Mrs Andrew Gamble, Wemyss, and Mrs. Wm. Gamble, Clarendon.

Mrs Blair died two years ago. Two brothers and one sister also survive: Hugh, postmaster at Rideau View near Manotick, now in his 92nd year; James W. of town, and Mrs John Truelove, Bathurst.

A curious coincidence is here narrated in reference to the political beliefs of the three brothers: Hugh Blair and his family are all Liberals, John Blair and his family, Consservative, and James W. Blair Independent.
