    David D. Geddes, 79, Pioneer Here, Dies - Two Weeks Illness Fatal to Early Resident

    David D. Geddes, 79 years old, pioneer of the East Grand Forks, MN vicinity, died Monday in a Grand Forks, ND hospital from pneumonia. Mr. Geddes lived at 319 North First Street, East Grand Forks.

    Born at Elphin, Ontario, October 19, 1855, Mr. Geddes came to Fisher, Minnesota in 1879 and homesteaded near Key West. He moved to East Grand Forks in 1919. He had been in good health until two weeks ago when he contracted a bad cold which turned to pneumonia.

    He was married to Ellen McDonald, who died in 1893.

    In 1903, he married Miss Catherine Beveridge.

    Survivors are his wife and their daughter, Mrs. A.S. Nelson of Northwood. By his first marriage he leaves four daughters, one son; Mrs. W.G. Miller and Mrs. P.W. Miller, both of Glendale, California; Mrs. W.J. McDonald of Wilkie, Saskatchewan; Mrs. Lillie Olsen of Grand Forks, and W.J. Geddes of East Grand Forks.

    He is also survived by three brothers and three sisters; Mrs. Agnes Ferguson, Lanark, Ontario; Mrs. Joseph Bishop of Strathcona, Alberta; Mrs. John Nevills of East Grand Forks; Dan Geddes of Elphin, Ontario; John Geddes of Crystal City, Manitoba; and Adam Geddes of Grand Forks. He also leaves 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

    Burial: Nisbet Cemetery, Huntsville Township, Polk County, Minnesota Cemetery.

    North Sherbrooke. at the home of his son-in-law, Alex Ferguson, Thursday Oct. 22nd, Mr. Daniel Geddes, aged 78 years & 7 mos. He was born near Glasgow, Scotland and came with his parents at the age of four years to Canada, settling first near Herron's Mills, in 1840 or 41. He moved to North Sherbrooke Twp. after his marriage to Agnes Ferguson, where they had a family of eleven children, ten of whom survive: Barbara (Mrs. Wm Legary), Pilot Mound, Manitoba; John, Crystal City, Manitoba; David, Davidson, Minnestoa; Agnes (Mrs. Alex. Ferguson), North Sherbrooke; Maggie (Mrs. James Darou), Ardoch; Duncan, deceased; Jennie (Mrs. Joseph Bishop), Strathcona, Alberta; Daniel, on the homestead (Lot 12, Con 1, North Sherbrooke); William, Dalhousie Lake; Adam, Grand Forks, Minnesota; Tena (Mrs. Robert Nesbit), Mallory, Minnesota.     Daniel Geddes was born in Scotland in the Glasgow area April 26, 1823, second in the family of David Geddes and Agnes Lambie. His parents came to Canada in 1827 and located in Township of North Sherbrooke, Lanark County, province of Ontario, a few miles east of Snow Road. Daniel attended school in the area and as a young man located on Lot 12, Concession 1 in the Township of North Sherbrooke about a mile west of Dalhousie Lake. He married Nancy Ferguson, a daughter of Duncan Ferguson and Barbara Currie, in St. Andrew's Church, Perth, Ontario on October 18, 1850. Nancy was born May 23, 1830. Through hard work the land was cleared and Daniel became a successful farmer. The first home on the property is still standing and is used as a machinery shed. It was built of logs and was replaced by a frame house in the 1890's. To Daniel and Nancy a family of eleven was born, five girls and six boys. With the exception of Duncan who died of pneumonia at the age of twenty-six, they all lived to a "ripe old age". When Daniel reached the age when he was unable to continue working, the farm was taken over by his son Daniel, who was commonly known as Dan's Dan. He continued to live with his son and the other members of the family, living in Ontario, spending about a month at a time with each. Daniel and Nancy were living with their daughter Agnes, on the outskirts of the Village of Lanark in October, 1908, when they contracted an illness from which they both died within five days. They are buried in Crawford Cemetery, Dalhousie Township.
