    Died:
The following information for this memorial page was taken from birth, marriage, death, and census records. Also the granddaughter of Katherine, Marjorie Woods provided family stories and pictures of the Fox and Bass family. Researcher Susan Garske Sylvester

Katherine Fox was born in March of 1874 in Leeds and Greenville North in south Elmsley. She was the last born child of 5 children in the union of Charles Fox and Janette Belonger Fox. She also had a half brother from a previous marriage of Charles Fox. When Katherine was only 3 years old her mother Janette died on March 11, 1877. This left Charles Fox with a family of 5 children under the age of 9. He did the same thing he did when his first wife died. He could not take care of the children so he placed them with various families in the area.

Granddaughter Marjorie Woods relates the family story: "Both Katherine and her sister Annie were placed in the home of the James Patterson family. They had to work on their farm when they were very young. They cooked the meals and did the household chores. His wife, Sally Patterson was in poor health and confined to her bed much of the time. The girls missed many days of school because of their duties."

    Location of Katherine Fox:

In 1881 in the Canadian Census Record: Francis Denna was 55 years of age and born in 1826. His birthplace was Quebec and he was Catholic. His occupation was a Cooper. (Charles Fox had also been a cooper.) They were living in District 107 Leeds and Grenville North. They were in Sub district B in Elmsley. His wife was Sharlet ( her maiden name was Lombar.) She was born in 1833 in Ontario. Her nationality was French and she was a Methodist. They have four children listed: Charles who was 25, Frank who was 22, Margaret Ann who was 19 and Julia Denna who was 16 years of age. Their children were Wesleyan Methodists. Living with them was Katherine Fox at 7 years of age. She was born in Ontario, was a Methodist, and of Irish nationality. Katherine was spelled Catherine on this census.

On the same page of the census record was her sister Anne Fox and she was living with the James Patterson family. In what year Katherine was placed with the Denna's or how long she lived with them is not known. There were family ties with the Denna family. Sharlet (Charlotte) Denna was a Lombar. She was the daughter of Francis Lombard who in his second marriage had married Ann Finlayson. Ann was Janette Belonger's grandmother and Katherine Fox's great- grandmother. Charles had placed her with family.

In the 1891 Census Katie Fox was now living with the Patterson family. Her birth date was 1874 and she was born in Ontario. She was 17 years old. Her religion was Methodist. Her parents were listed as born in Ontario. She was residing in District 85 Leeds and Grenville North and in Sub district Elmsley South. She was living with James and Sally Patterson. Her sister Anne was living with this family in the 1881 census. He was 49 years old and Sally was 41. James was born in Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1864. Sally was born in Ontario but her father was from Scotland. James and Sally list their religion as Methodist. Besides Katie Fox living with them, there was Archie Martin 12 years old and John Murphy who was 14 years old. The most interesting fact about this family unit is that James and Sally have adopted all three children. While Katie still retains the Fox name, the records show the Pattersons adopt her.

Marjorie's family story rings true and Katherine Fox joined Anne and lived at the Patterson farm for a number of years. If you follow the later Patterson census records, they continue to have young unrelated children living with them on their farm.

Five years later Katherine Fox will marry Richard Bass in 1896.

Marriage record of 1896: The record was in Chesterville in the County of Dundus. Richard was 32 years old and was living in Lombardy. His place of birth was South Crosby and he was listed as a farmer and a bachelor. His parents were Joseph and Eliza Bass. Kate Emma Fox was 21 years old. She was living in Lombardy. Her place of birth was South Burgess. Her parents were Charles and Janette Fox. They were married in Chesterville. Their religion was Wesleyan Methodist. They were married by F. H. Sprole.

In the 1911 Canada Census Richard W. Bass was 47 years of age. His wife Katie E. was 37 years old. At this time, They had 3 children: Evaline (Evelyn) Bass who was 13 years old, Austin E. Bass who was 9 years old, and Hazel L. Bass who was 7 years old. They were living in Ontario, District Leeds, District #91, Sub District: Elmsley South Township, Lombardy Village, Sub district #8 and the place of habitation was Elmsley Tp.

According to Marjorie Woods who has a family tree on the whole Bass family, "Her grandfather Richard or Dick Bass was a very stern man. The grandchildren were warned to be on their best behavior when visiting. No hired man would stay with him very long, even though they appreciated my grandmother's cooking. His son Austin Bass left home at age 19 and went to the United States. My brother Gerald began to work for our grandfather when he was in his teens. He seemed to get along well with him."

On December 28 1952 Katherine Fox died in Lombardy, Leeds, Ontario. Marjorie Woods provided her grandmother's obituary.

    Katherine Bass

A well-known resident of the Lombardy district, Mrs. Richard W. Bass died on Sunday, December 28, 1952.

The former Katharine A. Fox, she was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fox, of South Burgess. Her great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Finlayson, emigrated from Scotland in the 18th century and settled in Bathurst, near Perth.

In 1896 she was married to Richard William Bass and they spent their entire married life on the farm near Lombardy. Mrs. Bass was a woman of sterling qualities, always ready to offer a helping hand. Her chief interests were her church and family. She was an active member of Lombardy United Church, assisting in the choir and Sunday school for many years. For 11 years she was a member of the Women's Association. She leaves to mourn her loss, one son Austin E. Bass, Som-...Mass., two daughters, Mrs. Fred Weekes (Evelyn) and Mrs. Hazel Dodds, of Perth; Six grandchildren, Gerald Weekes, Mrs. Ian Woods, Robert A. Bass, and Elmer, Claire, and Lyle Dodds, and one sister, Mrs. A. Leach, of Orillia.

The funeral service was held at Lombardy United Church on Wednesday, December 31, and was conducted by Rev. W. R. Alp. of Perth, assisted by A. Calder, of Rideau Ferry. The testament to the esteem in which Mrs. Bass was held... hymns were sung and a solo "Near to the Heart of God' was rendered by Mrs. John Dalgleish. Many beautiful floral tributes were received. Interment was the public cemetery, Lombardy. The pallbearers were Mervin Clovell of Carleton Place: William J. McSpadden, John Dalgleish,Ross Miller, Donald Moodie and Ormand Joynt of Lombardy.

    Final note:
On her headstone was the "A" for her middle name. I could not find her birth record but her marriage record and the Census Record of 1911 had her middle name as Emma. The marriage record for her daughter Hazel recorded her middle name as Agnes.
