    Notes:

James left home shortly after his father's death, when he was a young man of about nineteen or twenty years of age, and spent some years farming in the states of Minnesota and North Dakota. During one summer in Minnesota, he was employed as a sheaf-binder on one of the old-time reapers. The knotter attachment for binding the sheaves had not been invented at tha time and it required two men to bind the grain by hand as it was elevated to a platform erected on the machine.

The fact that his uncle John and cousins were located in Minnesota at this time was the determining factor in leading James Munro to the United States. Some years after locating in Minnesota he acquired a quarter-section of land in the neighbourhood of Crookston and did some improvement work on the same but abandoned the property before securing his title. The writer (Peter Munro) and his father visited this farm in the summer of 1915 and although that was a banner year for wheat raising, this particular quarter-section was not in crop. It appeared to be situated in a low-lying part of the country and apparently was not suitable for farming purposes.

James Munro appears to have returned to Canada from Minnesota in 1881 and in the followiing year he married Fanny McKerracher. They were married on March 8th 1882 and at that time james was twenty-nine years of age and his wife was nineteen.

On his return from Minnesota, James conveyed his interest in the 'forty acre' farm to his brother John William who had been carrying on the work of the farm (with his mother and sister Rose Ann) since James left home. The date of the transfer was 1 October 1886.

During the first year after his marriage James Munro rented the farm of his brother-in-law, Thomas McKerracher, in the 6th concession of Bathurst. This farm was his wife's home and was granted by the Crown to John McKerracher about the year 1819. It remained in the McKerracher name for four generations after the grant was issued.

After spending one year on a rented farm, James Munro purchased for himself a small farm of eighty acres, more or less, on the Upper Scotch Line, in the township of Burgess, County of Lanark. (E1/2 L14 Con 10 Burgess), about six and one-half miles directly south west of the town of Perth. James Munro purchased this farm from George Hossie who owned considerable property in that neighbourhood in the early years. It is interesting to note that a number of farms in this part of the county were originally granted by the Crown on 17 April 1816 to James Bryce, who was the father of Mrs. George Hossie. James Bryce held the honour for some time of woning the first and only team of oxen in Bathurst Township.

James Munro was buried in the Scotch Line Cemetery, where his mother, sister Rose Ann and brother John had been buried before him. This small cemetery is situated about one-half mile from the farm where James Munro lived for almost forty-five years.
